CA: GOP rift in recall drive

Outgoing California Republican Party Chairman Shawn Steel ripped Assembly GOP leader Dave Cox on Friday for saying publicly that he would not support efforts to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis.

The controversy breathed new life into Cox's remark Tuesday to the Sacramento Press Club that he doesn't think the recall is a good idea and could distract from efforts to solve the state's massive budget crisis.

Could not the Republicans argue that via the recall they ARE offering a solution to the state's enormous fiscal problems, and that these problems were brought on by Davis, and that the solutions that Davis will try could further damage the state's economy, and that Davis is an extremely dishonest and duplicitous politician who cannot be trusted, and that the problem will only worsen the longer Davis is in office, and thus he must be removed in order to begin to solve the problem?

I really resent this! We are NOT irresponsible. Grayout created a machine that was pretty much unstoppable, spending almost as much as our prior budget SURPLUS and enlisting a ton of powerful and special interest groups $$ and influence on a campaign that *barely* squeaked him by. Add to the fact Bush totally dissed this state instead of campaigning for Simon so where did that leave us? I am going to say now, and AGAIN AND AGAIN, I wish everyone would QUIT dissing California and laughing at the fact that 'we got what we deserved' when probably in YOUR state, you don't have to go against Hollywood money and San Francisco gimme, gimme-mentality rote-Democratic voters along with pandering to illegal aliens to get them 'voting rights' - a measure narrowly defeated (in the form of just showing 'ID' - like a utility bill)! This state is always just WRITTEN OFF - well, if Karl Rove and company had their $hit together, they'd be COURTING this state, not dissing it. So if I ranted at you, sorry, but I take all 'California sucks as a whole state' posts personally.

I'm also against this recall. This project is fueled by the people who paid bribes to Davis and now are having their budgets cut anyway. They are hopping mad. We shouldn't waste GOP resources helping them try to shake down Davis to get their expected return on investment.

You obviously know nothing about the organizers and purpose of the recall effort. I can't point out each wrong point in your post, because it's just wrong in its entirety.

I think he has a point. Maybe I disagree, or maybe not. The DNC certainly has no problem getting involved and using all kinds of tricks to win. But maybe the GOP shouldn't.

Davis is currently acting like a moderate. He is rejecting some tax increases and telling the Democrats they aren't cutting anywhere near enough. Could a Republican do much better against the socialists right now? A white male Republican would quickly become the socialist media's lighting rod for all the blame.

The best tact is to let the socialists implode. When the voters have had enough, which hasn't happened yet but will, they will be ready to vote in a Republican majority. This recall works against this playing out properly.

Of late, the GOP elite don;t do much of anything, do they? Except for a precious few, and I count McClintock and Simon in that small group, most are just along for the ride to the bottom of the ocean. They don;t want to get involved.

oh, and we mustn't be part of a recall that has wide support from all the other partiesbecause they are doing iot for nefarious reasons, they might think we were political opportunists.

Why don't all these folks just crawl back in your holes and let the process work. Nothing else has worked up to this point , including the electoral process.

We all know he is always 'acting' - when pandering to minorities, he's a liberal; when 'fighting for California' -(whatever that means when all of these politicians say they'll 'fight for us') - he's a conservative, when 'cutting out our excesses and big programs', he's a Libertarian (oh, and a real liar at its best!). He does none of the above. We all know whatever spews out of his mouth is a complete lie. I absolutely KNOW the recall won't succeed - if by a miracle it did and he was replaced with a Republican it would be a disaster; no one would want to inherit this mess. California is going to feel the pain for a long time to come from this mismanagement and the only hope is we all remember which party did it - you are right - let them implode. But I *support* the recall effort to send him the message that he and those of his ilk's days are numbered from here on out.

In case you're on another planet, this state houses HOLLYWOOD and the SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, which the mainstream Californian cannot outvote. It's just a horrible fact. Whatever pissing match you're referring to, I must have been absent that day. Get a grip.

Yu know damn well what I'm talking about - the feckless combination of a lily white bunch of Orange County, small city and rural GOP social conservatives, gonna show those urban types what for.

I'll also point out that in your example, New Jersey is always in play, and Minnesota did OK in my book, given the demograhics there - of course, the type of GOP candidates who win in those places would never, ever meet the approval of the poor strategists of the CAGOP - because they're not "pure" enough.

You're not 'getting' my point at all. Thanks for calling everyone in California who's white 'feckless' - I guess any other adjectives that might go along with that should remain unspoken. I'll pass it on. The point I was making is that New Jersey violated the State Supreme Court election law and Minnesota was just a flagrant display of turning a funeral into a disgraceful political rally , both horrendous examples of bad politics. I was trying to draw a comparison to the California political situation. In the aforementioned situations, one got the desired result, one didn't. I'm done with this discussion with you now - I had no desire to get in a flame war with anyone today - honestly. I thought I was making a valid political point and having a discussion.

Look man, get me one page of that petition, and I'll sign it and get every line filled with valid signatures. My only qualm is if the state GOP is involved directly. Imagine if every losing party started recall drives every election. It's lame.

In this case, there may be an exception, seeing as how the state is so badly mismanaged.

A lot of folks are opposed to a recall because of the uncertainty involved. I'd be a bit more concerned that we do nothing and bankruptcy occurs. Anyone who believes the demRats will willingly cut spending are sadly mistaken. That goes for corruption as well.
