Labor leader Sean Harrigan beat out San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown as the new president of the nation's largest pension fund, despite Gov. Gray Davis' endorsement of Brown.

Harrigan, vice president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, will succeed William Crist as the head of the California Public Employees' Retirement System governing board. Crist is retiring after 11 years as president.

This is good news. Brown leveraging $100+ billion into a
political club would have been bad news for everyone in America.

Although not unusual for an active member of labor to control a union pension fund it is unusal when that pension fund is soley derived from tax dollars.

I do not know who is worse? A labor leader or Willie Brown.

I believe you could describe my expression as "smug satisfaction" at Willie Brown's defeat. Who will he inflict himself on next?

Both Davis, who served in the Legislature with Brown, and Senate President Pro Tem John Burton, D-San Francisco, had backed Brown, a former state Assembly speaker. In the end, however, it wasn't enough to swing the needed votes Brown's way. The board voted 8 to 4 in favor of Harrigan.

Both Davis and Burton backed Willie!

How did he lose?

HMMMM!

Maybe the other members of the board knew something!

I am not so sure Calpers will be around when younger state retire. The current board is hell bent on more social engineering at the expense of the fund. It has become a tool for radical labor leaders to stiffle capitalism and run corporations by proxy.

Were you around when the Bay area plumbers and pipefitters plundered their fund for the leaders fun and pleasure...ie Konocti Harbor resort.
