[history]
A House bill requiring photo ID at the polls is a Republican effort to keep minorities and the poor from voting, say critics. A GOP sponsor say it guards against fraud.
A bill before the Arizona Legislature that would require people to show additional identification in order to vote is a Republican ploy to keep minorities and the poor from voting, Pima County Democrats said.

Rep. Randy Graf, a Tucson Republican who is among the bill's sponsors, said the bill is intended to provide safeguards in a voting system that now requires no proof of identification from voters at the polls.

How about the Pubbies just spot them 5% points and they agree to vote fair? Would that be satisfactory?

The same standards used for airplane travel should be used.
Voting is much more important than getting on a plane, if we can be forced to prove who we are with government ID to fly (illegally) we certainly should DEMAND the same rules apply to voting. This is absurd. Of course this is all about illegals voting. I'm not even very happy with two peices of non-photo ID. Here in my state we have Vote By Mail, which should be called Fraud by Mail, as there is absolutely no way for them to detect any fraud. Gore won by a few thousand votes, in the predominantly union and Dem machine controlled County of Multnomah. What does that tell you?

Hmmm. Arizona. Don't they have a high illegal Mexican problem? Don't they have a Republican Senator up for re-election?
Me thinks Democrats are planning to steal Mr. McCain's seat.
To: madfly
I think the Demonrats allege that minorities don't have identification. This is certainly true of illegal aliens, but then they shouldn't be voting!

More typical crap from the left. This notion that being required to prove who you are somehow discriminates against minorities does not fool anyone with half a brain. The race card is theie last desperate attempt to keep voting fraud alive.

Paul Allvin, a spokesman for Gov. Janet Napolitano, a Democrat, said she does not support the bill. Of course not, because if it had been in place the last cycle, she would never have been elected.

The same standards used for airplane travel should be used. Excellent point. You don't hear La Raza calling for American or Northwest to allow "minorities and the poor" on to airplanes without photo ID.
I suggest we all contact the AZ Republican leadership to urge them to argue this point, and to make a big stink about it. Anyone have the numbers/fax/emails?

If Arizona is like Illinois, any citizen can get an ID similar to a Driver's License, using the same process as getting a Driver's License (having to present SSN card, birth certificate, etc.), but without taking a driver's test. Thus, there is no more discrimination against people who don't drive than there is people who do.
Actually, my problem with current voter registration laws is that they require people to show residency, but not citizenship. I belive that people should have to prove citizenship to vote, not just residency. There's no law (nor in my mind should there be) requiring someone to show citizenship to get a driver's license, so why is it accepted as ID when registering to vote?

Napolitano knows she won with illegal voting in South Tucson and on the Tohono'Oodham reservation and that without it she had no chance.
All the B.S. about identification making it "hard to vote" is crap and they know it. Watch how fast the illegal mother of a U.S. born child whips out the birth certificate for the TANF application. When they need identification, they've got it in spades.
California should be the warning for every Republican in the Arizona State Legislature: you'll end up out of office and with a state budget cratering if you DON'T vote for this. They need to get a collective spine FAST and lock down the voting boxes, or face being thrown out of office with the votes of illegal aliens. Not to mention being taxed to death to support said illegals.

Pima County Democratic Party chairman Paul Eckerstrom said in a press release. "Some citizens of Arizona do not have photo identification, because they do not own a car, do not have bills with their name and address on it, because they do not own their own home." Some? Maybe one....that crazy old hermit who lives in the middle of nowhere. I would love for this guy to pull out an American citizen who doesn't have an SSN and birth certificate (Requirement is a photo ID or 2 forms of ID) Just pull in one of these disenfranchised Americans and ask to see what is in their wallet/purse.
Illegal coddling liar.

Watch how fast the illegal mother of a U.S. born child whips out the birth certificate for the TANF application. When they need identification, they've got it in spades. Virginia is getting set to ban in-state tuition for illegals, so some states are finally wising up to these scams. But unless all 50 states crack down on everything together, including the phony matricular cards illegal aliens will just go hopping from one to another looking for the best deals. Got to start somewhere though, so at least Arizona is making the attempt.
