'Freaking' Banned - PRINCIPAL SAYS DANCE IS `LIKE PORNOGRAPHY'

Students at Palo Alto High are about to learn that ``freaking'' -- a popular way of dancing that simulates sex -- will get them kicked out of school dances.

It's just too nasty, school officials say.

Principal Sandra Pearson plans to tell the school's 1,650 students today that she is banning sexually provocative dance moves in response to suggestions from some parents and students. Critics say the amorphous dance known as freaking is a ``demeaning'' activity that looks like something that would be seen in an X-rated movie rather than at a high school dance.

``Freak dancing, to me, is like pornography,'' Pearson said. ``I may not be able to define it, but I sure know it when I see it.''

The ban puts Palo Alto on par with high schools across the country, from Wilcox High in Santa Clara to Oakland Mills High in Columbia, Md., that are taking steps to foster an atmosphere in which students respect each other, both inside and outside of the classroom. But some observers say the crackdown will be hard to enforce and could spark a backlash that's even harder to control.

Over the past two months, Pearson and the student council have tried to pin down what is appropriate behavior for school dances. They drafted seven rules, including no chewing gum (so the new gym floor won't be ruined) and ``no demeaning or sexually explicit dancing.''

Were I a gambling man, I'd bet that eventually "freaking" will be a category in ballroom dancing competitions, and that by then there will be some other dance that school principals et al. will be up in arms about.

About the only thing left is a strip tease and actual copulation.

But I'm sure you'll be out there cheering when your daughter enters her first "freaking" competition.

I'm glad the school is taking a stand. I've seen "freaking" (or "skin dancing" as they call it here in AZ)--it's unbelievably disgusting to see anyone do this, much less children.

When I was in high school the teachers would break us up if they (literally) couldn't see daylight between dance partners--while "Cherish" and "Hey Jude" blared on he school's record player. LOL--those were the good old days.

The teenagers aren't even aware of their own urges. If I bumped and grinded on the dance floor for an hour with a girl, four layers of clothes notwithstanding, I would be desperate to find anyplace in that gym where I could repeat the act without any intervening layers. My guess is that unless the bathrooms, dark corners, and parking lot are monitored, the teens are freaking naked, not clothed, by the time the evening ripens.

(1) Perhaps it might be a category in some other arena in another age, but "freaking" of this nature can already be found in major towns except that it's licensed and somewhat regulated - it's called "adult" XXX entertainment.

(2) By your logic, I take it that principals should not even be "up in arms" about this behavior of juveniles under their supposed control / supervision. And one wonders why people pull their kids out of public schools....

(3) This country is on a steady decline down its road of moral relativism and although it is no use to stop that trend (which I think is your point) -- I can at least just slow it in areas or people whom I can influence, and I'll give this principal points for trying to do her part.

We had this issue here in San DIego last year, remember? The Asst. Principal was fired because she "checked" some of the girls when they arrived for the dance. She was checking for thong underwear, remember? BIG deal all over the nation.

Apparently, some of the teachers observed the freak dancing at other dances. The girls were wearing very short skirts/dresses while also wearing thong underwear. They'd bend over, the guys were up against them.... I think you get the picture...

The "chaperones" were obviously ineffective because the students would ignore them. So, Ms. Rita Wilson, took it into her own hands and was fired because of it.

You should have heard the parents!!! And I don't mean in defense of Wilson! They defended their kids!!!

The other thing the "chaperones" noticed was all the "bodily fluids" left over on the floor after the dance.

You are right, fair is fair. Making citizens pay for schooling of people they don't know, can be argued as being for the public good. How they can justify spending money of the taxpayers, for the minority of those that can or want to play sports, is much harder to justify. In your case, your inability to participate, because of your home school status, makes it all the more obvious, that the policy is very unfair.
