House approves 'In God We Trust' measure
By Ryan Morgan Denver Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, February 19, 2003 - A bill requiring every public building in the state, including classrooms, to post plaques bearing the national motto "In God We Trust" passed the House Wednesday morning by a vote of 36-28.
Several Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Angie Paccione, D-Fort Collins, spoke out against the bill, saying it violates the principles on which this country was founded.
"Were a country founded on diversity. This motto does not reflect that diversity," she said. "We're a country founded on a freedom, including the freedom to have a religion thats not an organized religion in our public places, lets say all are welcome here."
Stafford's bill would not require state agencies to purchase plaques, because the expense of doing so in an already tight fiscal year would have made the proposal a political loser. But the bill does require state agencies, including schools, to post plaques that are donated by the private sector.
A suggested amendment that would have required the motto to be printed in both Spanish and English died Tuesday on the House floor.
Republican Al White, R-Winter Park, said the national motto is an unoffensive -- and already ubiquitous -- part of the national dialogue.
"To the critics, I ask, 'Do you not spend our good U.S. currency because it says In God We Trust?'" he said. White acknowledged that the signs might make some people uncomfortable. But, he said, "I see things every day in our society that make me uncomfortable. And you know what I do? I ignore them."
'Tis a pity, the only thing it violates is the new post-'60s 'Rat motto, "In atheism we worship." These kooks don't have a clue as to what this country was founded on.
This country was not founded on diversity, it was founded upon a belief in unalienable rights bestowed by God. The motto is taken from the Great Seal of our country and found on most, if not all our currency. Certain, diverse ideas and actions could have gotten one killed at the time of the revolution, namely support for the crown after the Declaration of Independence. Nuts to that Rat Trap Paccione.
She also said: "We're a country founded on a freedom, including the freedom to have a religion thats not an organized religion
in our public places, lets say all are welcome here."
Wow, she must have minored in non-sequitars while getting that liberal arts degree!
Hope they are stale beer nuts, at that.
Liberals! They make stuff up in their heads then try to project their hallucinations on society at large.
Just one example: I was certain (being college-educated myself, hrmph hrmph!) until maybe 10 years ago or so, that the 2nd Amendment RKBA clearly referred to the National Guard! Boy, was I steaming when I learned that the Guard wasn't even created until the late 19th century. That's why I will go on cursing liberalism till the day I die.
Yes, probably partial to that Wiccan nonsense. Guess they don't have much belief in God. (But be sure to respect their right to have an all-night baccanalia, at gov't expense, in praise of the various demi-gods, demons, spirits, elves, fairies, witches, and what-have-you.
