Rep. Steve Barrar (R-160) will introduce a resolution in the General Assembly requiring the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (LCB) prohibit state stores from carrying and selling imported French wines.

"I am tired of America always being there for the French through the 60 years of the Cold War, and with billions of dollars in aid," Barrar said.

Pennsylvania is one of the world's biggest customers of French wine due to its state store system. A state rep is seeking to prohibit the sale of the wine. The resentment goes all the way back to Ira Einhorne and Mumia.

While I don't intend to support France, I don't like seeing this boycott become a legislated action. Americans should be free to make this decision on their own.

California makes better wines than France in my opinion. In blind tests, moderately priced California wine often beats the expensive French wines.

The sale of wine and hard liquor is a government monopoly in Pa. It's a vestige of prohibition. The state makes decides not to buy from all sorts of vineyards every purchasing cycle for whatever reason. Not buying from the French because they are American-hating twits is a good enough reason for me.

Whether the state store system is a good or bad thing is another debate.

There are a lot of places that make better wine than France. Nobody does a better whine though.
