I was thinking about this also. We only live a half mile from the school. I would rather they be with me, of course. We have at least 4 of those FRS radios. I was thinking of giving one to each of them to keep in their bag. My husband and I are trying to think of different scenarios where the kids would ditch school and run home.

Ditching and running home isn't an option for my kid due to location of the school from home and also because of the security to keep kids inside.
However, my kid has been instructed that if a message ever comes to her in class that I've shown up to take her to her forgotten doctors appointment, she's to ask no questions, nod her head and mumble "oh that's right, I forgot" and insist that she needs to get out of class. It's the only way I can think to get her home if it hasn't been all arranged ahead of time which is what you are supposed to do if they need to leave school during the day.

We have at least 4 of those FRS radios. Those are excellent. If you an afford an upgrade, the newer GMRS radio's have a longer range (and are less likely to have heavy usage in an emergency). It's important to have a predetermind main and backup frequency that your children understand how to use. For younger children, it's imperative that they understand about channels and how to avoid changing them to one you can't be reached on. Maxon makes an excellent little FRS that is set by dip swich in the battery compartment and is foolproof for young children (as long as they understand how to turn it on and off), but it's only FRS. Those are the ones I chose when my daughter was just old enough to use them and I was worried about her getting lost (or snatched) in a mall or other large crowd.
