No matter what, something was wrong over California
and a freeper saw it on fire over Las Vegas. What ever happend, if it just keep burning on re entry but made it to Teaxs where it just exploded or something else. I don't know. But at 9:03 eastern thread time here something was already wrong.

I tried to get a better version of the ground track map from the NASA site, but apparently, although listed, it has been removed. I wonder why they removed it? Maybe they feared a few treasure hunters....

TO HOWLIN:
No but the biased regarding reports out of California was inordinately clear, and not just from you. I still find that extremely odd.

He didn't know it at the time that he saw trouble. As seen from his next post but he saw it and add in the report from Cal and the shuttle looks to me to of been on fire as it came in and by the time it had reached Texas it exploded.

Can we agree that there was a problem with this Space Shuttle?
I agree. There was a problem with this space shuttle - they don't just break apart and explode for no reason... I think the correct question would be, "WHEN did this space shuttle develop the problem'...

My opinion is that it started at re-entry and burned getting hotter and hotter as it streaking across America until it came fully apart over Texas.

I am willing to bet the fireball he said he saw was the Shuttle on fire from the re-entry. I will go as far as to say this again. At re-entry it caught fire which is normal only this time that fire never ever stopped and instead got much worst as it heated up more until it was over Texas and because of that heat it came apart.

When I was in High School I had a Mechanical Drawing teacher who would get after the students for any number of things. In his booming Norwegian voice he would say, "I'm a gonna uh hit you over the uh head with the uh ball-peen hammer." I always hesitate to get on a thread when you two are within ten miles of it at the same time. I like both of you, however, I understand the chemistry, or lack thereof, that can develop on FR.
It is an interesting thread just the same.
I watched the Investigative Board replay on C-SPAN this AM. I have nothing to base this on except what I see as the enormity of the bureaucratic work ahead, but, to me, there is a possibility that we may have seen our last Shuttle Flight.
(BTW, Walter Martinen would also say, "Here ya are, old enough to reproduce, and ya go around goosin' each other in the a$$ with a T-Square."

I'm coming into this thread late and without preconceived notions of who said what. I read the Leadpenny thread late on Saturday morning. When I got to the "it's on fire" post it gave me the creeps, but did not seem like there was any implication that something was wrong at the time it was posted.
The phrase "firey reentry" has been around since Allen Shepherd's flight. And the shuttle always causes sonic booms.
It was not until touchdown time came and went that it was obvious that there had been a disaster. Then everything got reinterpreted.
