Schools Rethink Definition of Gifted

BALTIMORE –– Maryland school districts and nonprofit groups are trying to address the under-representation of minority children in gifted programs.

Officials want to correct biases in the ways children are determined to be gifted. They're trying to make sure precocious pupils from poor families don't lose out on gifted programs simply because their parents don't know about them. ... The program expanded the list of factors used to identify children as gifted beyond standardized test scores.

The snips from the article highlight the actions being taken to expand the definition of "gifted and talented." Personally, I never cared for the term, but it's going to be changed to include "pupils from poor families," among other unlisted qualities. The disturbing trend is that more and more the academic focus of school is being changed to one of "feeling good" and inclusion. This type of thinking is one reason why we home school our children.

The IQ test was invented to find unrecognized gifted children. Strange thing, those unintended consequenses.

We WILL find smart,gifted and talented minority's if we have to give them 20 points extra on every test!
