Monday was the first day of the weekly six night tour around the local circuit for the 'rasslers where I was raised. I'd cut school early and go watch them go through the routines they would use that night and repeat ver batim each night in the other cities on the road. During the performance I sold popcorn or soft drinks.
It was beauitiful. The "ring master," for want of a better term, would stop the action often and they would discuss the finer points of whatever was happening. Almost every move was most carefully choreographed, even to when to stop and make faces at the audience, slap the tin covered with canvas ring floor to make a loud boom, etc. The two (or more) 'rasslers and "inattentive" referee had to repeat many moves until they got it just right. They were masters at keeping the audience at a fever pitch without causing a riot.
The audience believed every minute of it, not aware the performers shared one dressing room and rode together on their bus to the next tank town. Fellows who were allegedly bitter enemies shared rooms on the road. I'm sure it hasn't changed except for the addition of more skimpily clad females and fancy lights and fireworks.
