What the matricula consular actually does is legitimize the existence of Mexican nationals, regardless of their immigration status in this country. It serves as confirmation that a person exists and that he or she is a Mexican citizen living in the United States, period.

It's already accepted by many US cities.

In a couple of years, I predict states will start accepting it, if they haven't already.

By the end of the decade, there will be a federal law requiring it's acceptance.
