It the Menendez boy had been stand up guys, and killed their father and left their mother alone, and said they did it and why they did it (because their father was an abusive violent monster) I would have voted to let them go.

The Menendez "boys" as you call them were big hairy chested men. If they didn't like their treatment at home they could have left. Gotten jobs, changed their names & never seen their parents again.
