Report: Bin Laden Predicts 'Martyrdom' in New Tape
Wed February 12, 2003 02:12 PM ET
LONDON (Reuters) - A British-based Islamic news agency said Wednesday it had a new tape recording of Osama bin Laden in which the Saudi militant allegedly predicts his own death this year in an unspecified act of "martyrdom."
The Ansaar news agency said it bought the recording, which it likened to bin Laden's last will and testament and said was freshly recorded, from an unidentified man through the Internet.
"Indeed surely this year will I lead my steed and hurl it, and my soul, at one of the targets ... and I become a martyr," Imran Khan, who runs Ansaar in the Midlands city of Birmingham, translated the tape as saying.
His claim could not be independently verified.
The United States blames bin Laden for the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington.
The tape, if genuine, would be the latest in a line of his recordings to surface.
Tuesday, Qatar-based television channel al-Jazeera broadcast a taped message believed to be from the fugitive militant, which warned Arab states against backing a U.S.-led war against Iraq.
In May 2002, Ansaar released a video of bin Laden which they claimed showed he had survived the U.S. war in Afghanistan, but which Jazeera said was filmed before the war even began. Jazeera had broadcast several video and audio tapes by bin Laden since the New York and Washington attacks.
Khan said the seller of the new 53-minute tape, which is in Arabic, spoke with a Saudi accent and said the tape had been made at an undisclosed location this month.
In the tape, the speaker refers to fighting the United States for more than a year in Afghanistan. U.S. troops have been fighting there since autumn 2001 when they set out to avenge the Twin Towers attacks and destroy bin Laden's network.
Khan said the new Ansaar tape also claims a war on Iraq is a precursor to an invasion of Saudi Arabia.
Ansaar, which would not divulge more details of the recording, is offering the tape for sale.
"I'm open to offers... I had one of 20,000 ($32,310)," Khan said.
A spokesman for the Foreign Office said the department was unaware of the tape but added: "We would listen to any broadcast carefully and consider our response."
I think he is just mad that Bush stole his Mojo.
I suspect you are making the same mistake I did, unless you heard the tape in Arabic. I was thinking the same thing until I suddenly realized that BL would not have made the tape in English--all I was actually hearing was a translator :)
Clinton gave the socialist around the world all the power they craved. He threw money at everyone like candy at a gay parade.
Now that an adult is back in charge, they're fighting for survival. They're dieing in his country, so I'd guess the rest feel their fate is going to be the same.
Evil is being defeated. We need to keep up the good fight and pray for President Bushs success in all his endevors. With America behind him, he'll have the faith and courage to keep the pace.
Bush is the right man in the right place right now.
This may be a mistranslation. He may have said; "I'm gonna blow my ass to pieces."
Ass being another word for donkey, it may have been translated into "steed", rather than "my butt".
Or something like that.
dep
Why is Reuters treating Sept. 11th like it's a he said she said?
The planes really crashed, the buildings really burned and fell, the people really died and Osama really did claim credit for it.
Geez!
"This may be a mistranslation. He may have said; "I'm gonna blow my ass to pieces."
I think he's going to puke on his horse.
His body is deep in a collapsed cave.
If this is real I would think it would be a big attack though.
In time, their references to events in these spliced tapes will sound more and more out of date. In think in the second to the last tape, there was an oblique reference to Bali. Of course, Indonesia has a big AQ presence and no doubt OBL has made tapes referencing a number of possible attacks there.
But with time these accidental hits will no longer be possible. Game up.
Hey imam dude, I saw that when it first came out.... in Lord of the Rings. You know where Aragorn and that King ride out on their horses to fight the orcs...
All experts who heard it yesterday said it does sound like him. I am talking about each cable channel's expert who knows bin Laden's voice, plus our own intelligence agency.
Please note, I am not saying it IS him, of course, though I do think it was his voice, but relaying what those who know his voice very well said.
The first statement is based upon the history of Al Qaeda; the second is based upon certain passages in the Koran.
If he appears in armor, leave the cities immediately.
Tinfoil off!
