Secretary of State Colin Powell, in an interview on Fox News Sunday (2/9), said something that confirmed an observation of my own. Secretary Powell pointed out, with evident bemusement, the frustration of being criticized simultaneously for being unilateral in the case of Iraq, and multilateral in the case of North Korea.
Of course, the charges of unilateralism against the U.S. for trying to force Iraq to live up to UN Resolution 1441, have by now been exposed as bogus. The fact that 18 countries are currently allied with America disputes that theory. But this hasnt stopped the opponents of the Bush administration from repeating this allegation ad nauseam.
Whats most baffling, is the contradictory nature of these accusations when it comes to North Korea. From the minute North Korea started upping the bellicose rhetoric, Democrats and leftists jumped on the issue as a means of trying to undermine the credibility of the Bush administration. They were accused of applying a double-standard in rushing to war with Iraq instead of North Korea. In fact, the administration has wisely acted with restraint in the case of North Korea and has tried to enlist the aid of allies in the region, such as South Korea, Japan and China. But the very multilateralism that opponents demand with regards to Iraq, is belittled when it is attempted in North Korea.
The truth is, these naysayers arent really in favor of us going to war with North Korea. If we were to call their bluff and announce an imminent military engagement in that region, the very same people would immediately begin marching in anti-war rallies. Theyre not against U.S. military intervention, theyre against anything the Bush administration does. After all, where were the so-called peace marchers during the bombing of Serbia under Clintons presidency? The anti-war movement should be seen for what it is, a very thinly disguised mobilization to counter anything and everything that the Bush administration puts forward.
If multilateralism is the mantra, then its supporters should back its application in all cases.
However,we do have a loyal following of conservative readers who do battle with these idiots in the comments section on a daily basis. But I want to invite anybody who is interested, to check out the site and slay the libs with your intelligent commentary---not just on my articles, but anywhere you find the lefties frothing at the mouth!
Thanks all!
