Saying no to war (** Unspeakable Idiocy Alert **)
Boston Globe ^ | 2/11/03 | James Carroll

Excerpted:

Powell's prosecutorial summary of the case against Saddam should have been prelude not to further warmongering but to a legal indictment of the Iraqi leader for crimes against humanity. In what court, you ask, and under what jurisdiction? America's imminent war takes on an absurd -- and also tragic -- character in the light of what else is happening right now. Last week the International Criminal Court was initiated with the formal election of judges. Next month the court will be official. Its purpose is exactly to deal with offenses like those of which Saddam stands accused. A forceful indictment in such a forum, followed by a trial, verdict, and world-enforced sentence, has an unprecedented potential for a laser-like release of transforming moral energy.

The court intends on the world scene what has already happened within nations -- the replacement of violent force with the force of law. A true alternative to war.

I'm reminded from a line from Ruthless People - "This could well be the dumbest man on the face of the earth..."

What exactly does he suppose is going to happen at the Internation Criminal Court that could possibly remove Saddam Hussein from power without the exact same military action that he's decrying? "Oh, the ICC has convicted me - I'd better step down now. Turn myself in." Please. Utter, complete and total idiocy. Saddam Hussein will be removed from power in Iraq in one of three ways - an old age death of natural causes, assassination or military force. The 1st isn't going to happen, because Bush won't let it. The 2nd isn't going to happen, because Hussein won't let it. The 3rd is going to happen, whether the UN approves or not, whether the ICC gets involved or not. Period.

But the thing is, under his scenario, we'd be in the exact same situation that we're in now, only two years further in the future. You have to wonder what color the sky is in the little fantasy world he's constructed for himself...

Remember the League of Nations in the 1930's? The League condemmed Italy for using poison gas on the Ethiopians--the war continued. The League castigated Japan for their war in China--the Japanese envoy envoy walked out and nothing happened.

Does anybody believe that this International Court will be any more effective?

Just more wishful thinking. It would be nice if all this stuff worked. But history shows us that it does not. I don't know what it would take for a person like this to say enough is enough and war IS the answer. Apparently, 9-11 was not sufficient.

...has an unprecedented potential for a laser-like release of transforming moral energy.

Yeah, right!

Like the naked old bags from Marin County, CA, thought they could trade b**bs for bombs.

In the lyrics of the great socialist folk song "Where have all the Flowers Gone", the song asks; "When will they ever learn". I suggest it is the Left and the Pacifists that are guilty of being chronically ignorant about the evils of this world, and in doing so, perpetuate these evils.

Perhaps, if we rid the world of Pacifists, we will rid the world of war?
