This image shows a preserved, dissected freshwater mussel. Note that the heart sits in a space called the pericardial cavity. In molluscs, this cavity (which also contains a portion of the gonads and kidneys) represents the remains of a coelom. As mentioned on the previous page, the mantle cavity in molluscs is the principal body cavity, containing the remainder of the internal organs.
