A clause (things more unsettling than spending a day being grilled by a team of homosexual lawyers) is distinguished from an independent phrase (under oath or being recorded), which is a group of related words that does not contain a subject-verb relationship. Clauses stand by themselves and the phrase can be removed from the sentence without changing its basic meaning.
