Another Ford Police Cruiser Catches Fire
Officer Escapes Injury In Car Fire
POSTED: 7:17 a.m. CST February 5, 2003 UPDATED: 7:51 a.m. CST February 5, 2003
DALLAS -- A close call for one Dallas police officer late Tuesday night.
The officer was reportedly trying to jump-start another car on LBJ Freeway when his Crown Victoria police cruiser suddenly burst into flames.
There is no word yet on what caused the cruiser to catch fire, but Ford's Crown Victoria is currently being investigated for safety concerns.
There were no injuries reported in the incident, and all roadways are clear.

I see the NSA's tippy-top-secret SFCVC (Spontaneous Ford Crown Victoria Combustion) program has completed DEMVAL phase.
Have fun riding in your new cars, guys!

My husband was a policeman and had a new Crown Victoria. It was parked in a building we owned. It caught on fire and burned down the whole building.
Experts were not able to determine if the fire was the fault of the car or the add-on equipment that had just recently been installed.

A bad design.
Cars use a lot of circuitry so there's voltage flowing all through the wiring. Sometimes if one part gives out and the combination is just right you can have an overload that has very negative results.
I can't recall any cars off the top of my head but I believe there have been recalls to replace defective electrical set ups.

Maybe plastic fuel lines instead of the hard metal lines of the past. Ditto for the fuel injectors at each cylinder! my friends 94 Ranger caught fire in his yard. Happily, he put the fire out and the Ford dealer made good on it. Some things should still be made the old fashioned way...out of metal!

reportedly trying to jump-start another car on LBJ Freeway when his Crown Victoria police cruiser suddenly burst into flames. Always make the first connections at the good battery. Then, after connecting the positive to the 'bad' battery, try to connect the black jumper lead to the engine block of the 'bad' car (for ground), thus avoiding the sparks around the battery teriminal and any hydrochloric gases that may be lingering (BOOM!). For most GM vehicles keep the iginition 'off', otherwise you'll fry the diodes in the alternator and will be looking to buy another one real soon.
Not familiar with the Ford Crown Victoria but I recall a Thunderbird that went up in smoke while the occupant was in an apartment. The fire started about mid-windsheild under the dash.

I once worked in a garage that worked on police vehicles...even a couple years ago there were at least 2 crown vics that burned up. Both happened when light bar was running. When they get all that gear pulling juice i guess things got hot and ignited something that melted the fuel line.
