Feb. 6 — A snapshot of America’s mood shows increases in President Bush’s approval ratings and in the percentage of Americans ready to support military action against Iraq, according to an NBC Poll released Thursday and taken soon after Secretary of State Colin Powell laid out the U.S. case before the United Nations.

TIM RUSSERT, NBC’s Washington bureau chief, said the bumps were “largely” due to the president’s State of the Union speech last month and to Powell’s presentation on Wednesday, which many observers felt offered strong evidence for action against Iraq. Below is a summary of the survey of 514 adults: Bush ratings: 61 percent approved, 31 percent disapproved. Last month, the ratio was 54 to 40. Bush’s high was 81 percent in November 2001. Military action against Iraq: 60 percent felt it should happen, 27 were against it. That compares with 56 and 36 percent in January. The 27 percent mark was the smallest percentage since the question was asked in polls dating back to April 2002.

When we finally do attack, it will be hard to measure public opinion during the operation. Because the operation will be over almost as soon as it begins.

THese percentage changes are probably within the Margin of error on such a small sample size and not statistically significant. But that never stops opinion makers from reading meaning out of them. Total waste of time.

Considering the speed at which this war could happen, it could be mind boggling to consider.

Scenario: UN finally votes unanamously for military action. That afternoon, President Bush addresses the nation. The President begins with an announcement that hostilities have begun as of an hour prior to the address. The President is interrupted in the middle of the address with call from Gen. Tommy Franks, "Mr. President, Baghdad is secure...."

Oh well, not likely, but I have to believe that we have special forces troops on the ground there now. We may have even begun to "cheat" on the border and moved in somewhat.

The main aim by our military is to move so quickly and so forcefully that they will not have a chance to use WMD's.

If we had a confirmed missle launch in progress from Iraq to the US, this 25% would say we shouldn't attack because there is no proven al-Qaeda connection.

I bet Bush will get it to 80/20 support at least by the time he starts. He'll probably do an oval office address. Right now, the leftists feel protesting might stop/or slow the war. Once it's going, some of the honest lefties (sounds like an oxymoron, but bear with me) will not want to oppose a wartime president.

The last NBC poll had President Bush's approval ratings down to 54%. This one shows him at 61%. Timmy Russert looked very, very depressed when he talked about this jump in approval on MSNBC this morning. Made my day.

I just read on another thread about a CNN/Gallup nationwide poll showing Bush at 68% approval. Funny how I didn't see any headlines about the President's approval rating climbing. :-)

LOL! The media only touts polls showing the President's approval ratings "plummeting". They are almost humerous at this point. The polls showed a drop in approval just prior to the mid-terms and look what happened!! The polls are clearly manipulated and we all need to remember that.

Agreed. However, they should be shamed just like Charles Lindberg after we uncover the torture chambers and rape rooms in the Iraqi prisons, not to mention all the WMD depots.

I think the invasion will occur just after the evening rush-hour. I was talking with a US Marine yesterday about the danger of sniping incidents on US troops by civilians. He said there is likely a contingency plan to surround Baghdad and quarantine the residents. Cut them off from moving into or out of the city for a time, no supplies, etc.

It's anyone's guess, but I think this time the world will see a much different operation than in Desert Storm, where my friend was present.

And all the while, our technology keeps improving.

This is going to be a military operation of such mind-boggling efficiency that it will take the world's collective breath away.
