"I bet they were doing a little intelligence gathering up there."


That was my thought. They said when it launched that it was the first non-science mission in 3 years. My thought at the time was that they might be doing some hi-res imaging of Iraq and/or DPRK.

I believe the shuttle mission also involved deploying part of a chain of necklace satellites for military purposes. I also recall this is not something that was *hidden*, so back off, tinfoil-hatters.
