You overestimate how many Israelis strictly observe the sabbath. Even many who do have things like timers on TV's because watching TV is OK, but turning it on is work.

Not on the Sabbath. It would be my guess that the Shabbat was over. I don't know how many hours ahead Israel is, but the new day begins at sundown ( from the biblical passage, "The evening and the day were the first day").
It would be my guess that it was past sundown, but am not sure.

I think Sabbath is finished over there. Besides, a majority are not that observant.

It is after sundown, tv is kosher for even the most othodox. 80% of Israel is secular anyway...

Not on the Sabbath. Why is this? Are their tv station/stations state-owned,and cut off on the Sabbath? If not,surely a large part of their population aren't Ultra-Orthodox,and they would be watching something as historic as this.
