It wasnt a glow that spread back like a comet but it must have been "on fire" because it was bright and big.

The more I read the more it hits home that the bright red light in the center was something burning up.
Of course it could have just been the shuttle itself and it is normal for it to be red hot.

Yes, I think winodog was probably seeing some trouble at the time but that comment was in response to me asking if the Columbia was glowing. I had just figured the heat shield was getting warm on re-entry. As we went back and looked at it later we both think something was happening over Nevada and maybe even California. The latest news conference kinda confirms this, I think.
