Army of 01 - New Nascar Car
The State ^ | 2-01-03 | JIM McLAURIN

• Army of "01"? Inspired by its new motto, the United States Army Winston Cup car will carry the number "01" during the 2003 NASCAR season. The black and gold Pontiac Grand Prix, owned by MB2 Motorsports, will be driven by Jerry Nadeau.

"We chose the number 01 to reinforce our slogan 'An Army of One', " said Lt. Gen. Dennis Cavin, U.S. Army Accessions Commander. "The individual talents of each soldier are melded to create a single-minded team."

The No. 01 replaces the M&Ms-sponsored No. 36, which was the MB2 car number since the team joined the Winston Cup circuit in 1997. (The No. 1 already was taken by Steve Park's Pennzoil Chevrolet.)

Johnny Benson, the driver of the No. 10 Pontiac, which is the sister team to Nadeau's, notes that his comfort level has risen since his teammates' sponsor change.

" ... It's kind of cool to have all those Army generals and uniforms walking around our shop," Benson said. "I think we might have the safest race shop in NASCAR."

It will be easy to root for this car to win. Surprised they aren't painting it in desert camo.

This explains it better than I can:

October 31, 2002
12:14 PM EST (1714 GMT)

MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- The United States Marine Corps is pleased to announce that it is renewing its marketing partnership with Team Rensi Motorsports and the No. 25 Ford Taurus in the NASCAR Busch Series for the 2003 season.

The United States Marine Corps' main objective of their NASCAR marketing partnership with Team Rensi Motorsports is to establish one-on-one contact with recruiters and young adults between the ages of 17 and 24, which may lead to possible recruitment. Each year, The United States Marine Corps strives to recruit 40,000 young men and women. Currently, there are approximately 172,000 active duty Marines.

"The recruiting environment is very competitive," said Captain Robert Geiger, Marine Corps Recruiting Command. "NACAR is the fastest growing spectator sport in the country, especially among the age group we are targeting. We have found that with a partnership in this sport, we get more 'bang for the buck' than with traditional advertising."

Geiger feels that the Corps' involvement in NASCAR is a perfect fit with its ideals and values.

"There are so many similarities between NASCAR racing and The United States Marine Corps," explained Geiger. "Both include individuals looking for a challenge, working together as a team to reach an established goal, and giving your best every day to succeed in your chosen profession.

The patriotism and All-American spirit of NASCAR fans makes the Marine Corps feel at home," adds Geiger. "We love to engage the young men and women who follow the sport because so many of them have the strength of character that we look for in our recruits. We have a high appreciation for all NASCAR fans, not just the ones waving the No. 25 banner, because they are Americans and that's what the Team Marines racing program is all about."

The 2003 season will mark the Marine Corps' third year of involvement in the NASCAR Busch Series and their second year with Team Rensi Motorsports...

Am I missing something here?

Obviously.

Each branch of the armed forces has money allocated to them for recruitment purposes, hence the "be all you can be" or the stupid "an army of one" advertising campaigns.

The Army is using some of that money to advertise in a venue that analysts say gives the biggest bang for the advertising buck.

A smart move on their part.

"Am I missing something here?"

Yes.

It's called "ADVERTIZING".

Of course, should you or others object, the complaint department is over there....on the left.

The slogan "An Army of One" is an oxymoron.

From the American Heritage © Dictionary

NOUN: Inflected forms: pl. ox·y·mo·ra (-môr, -mr) or ox·y·mo·rons
A rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined, as in a deafening silence and a mournful optimist.

Not me, Dodge 400 in Darlington is my next race in person. A friend of mine works for Hendricks and Gordon and tells me to look for a big year for 24.

True, but the lazy- and stupid-a** Generation.commers the Army is trying to recruit don't know and don't care about proper English. I'd be surprised if they even know how to look up a word in a dictionary.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

I am a Jimmy Spencer fan and still would love to see the 01 in the winners circle a couple of times this year. No matter how good a driver Gorden is he is a major cream puff.

I had the very same reaction - initially. But the are reaching a patriotic crowd on the NASCAR circuit. Probably a great marketing move.

Uh, care to revise that? Look who we're talking about now.

owned by MB2 Motorsports, will be driven by Jerry Nadeau.

God love him, but this man has won just won race in the past five years. He'll get some advertising though. Nadeau's car usually doesn't blow up, run out of gas, or cut a tire before halfway through the race

Nascar is on it's way to becoming the #1 spectator sport in the country. I believe it's second only to the NFL at this point. The cars are the perfect billboard, selling millions in diecast replicas and other collectibles. I would have to say it has a conservative mindset due to the amount of drivers who are hunters and shooters, their unabashed patriotism, and the fact that ya don't hear about drivers with murder charges, crack addiction or rap sheets. Unfortunately for me, a lot of the enjoyment went out of it when my driver died 2 years ago upon impact with the wall at Daytona. His name was Earnhardt and he was a GOD.

An Army of One

A U.S. "Army of one" could probably annihilate the Iraqi Republican Guard, but I'd prefer a larger outfit.
