February 1, 2003 -- Police in Washington state said yesterday a possible sighting of missing pregnant California woman Laci Peterson in a grocery store is likely not her, after they reviewed the store's video surveillance tapes.

No surprise here.

I'm sorry, though, that it may have raised the family's hopes.

What about the rest of the story? The woman the clerk saw said she was being kidnapped and was pleading for help. The article doesn't say if the police are investigating that.

Is there another missing woman? If this clerk lied and made all this up, is she being charged?

I was sure it was not Laci, for Laci is not likely to be alive with a husband like Scott.

Two things did not ring true about the store clerk's story:

1. Would someone who had been kidnapped and has a few seconds to ask for help ask the clerk to call "the authorities"? Does not sound natural to me.

2. How could the clerk forget an encounter like that?
