Co-Founder of Designated Driver Program Charged With DUI
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A co-founder of a designated driver program is facing DUI charges. Marcel Beaumont, 49, of Delray Beach, was charged early Sunday after police said he fell asleep behind the wheel of his BMW while at an intersection.
Beaumont was awakened by police, who said they found him to be slurring his speech. Beaumont declined comment Tuesday.
Beaumont is a co-founder of Smashed Inc., a program in which individuals can purchase $30 memberships which let them call a toll-free number and obtain a ride home from any Delray Beach-area establishment at which they have been drinking.
The offer is valid over 36 days this year, coinciding with seven holiday periods.
Beaumont received a letter from Gov. Jeb Bush in 1999 commending him for his "commitment to making roadways safer."
According to the Smashed web site, Beaumont is a retired Montreal police officer working as a marketing director for a South Florida tourist magazine.

Co-Founder of Designated Driver Program Charged With DUI Makes perfect sense to me, why would a guy who spends most of his time sober even think about finding someone to drive drunks? Necessity really is the Mother(s) Of Invention. I may be totally wrong... but I'm a fool!

Soon I think local watering-holes will be forced to provide this type of drunk-catering.
