nicollo, you are more well-versed in this historical period than am I.

You should bone-up on Teddy Roosevelt, Miss Marple.
The History Channel just ran a special on his life, and it was truly interesting.
There are differences of course, but anybody who is intellectually honest would have to admit the uncanny similarity between Teddy's and PJB's philosophies on a wide gamut of issues.

Great TR quotations from 1918, Willie, but not relevant here. Roosevelt spoke at a time when SEDITION laws were enacted and enforced, including upon a Congressman who was stripped of his immunities and hauled off to jail for opposing US intervention in the European War. Granted, the guy was a bloody socialist, and it's kinda hard to justify in retrospect, but that guy's anti-war, non-intervention position reeks of PJB, n'est-ce pas?

Roosevelt was the loudest voice clammering for the War. Also, much of what Roosevelt said in that period was tainted by his hatred for the President. He was pissed at Wilson for refusing him a commission (Roosevelt lost a son there in his stead).

Buchanan shares a greater similarity to the Roosevelt of 1912. Both tried to kill the Republican Party. That TR quotation about the parties was ignorant, wrong, stupid, inflammatory, self-serving, and a lie. That is to say, it was a campaign speech. He lost, and the Republican Party was rebuilt without him, and better for it.
