Rumsfeld is a forward military thinker, and he has generals who are not. So, he must get them to incorporate new thinking, tactics and strategies, which requires him to kick a little tail. After 8 years of PC generals like McCaffrey and Wesley Clark, I'm happy with Rummy running things from the Secretary's office. When the fighting starts, he'll let the Generals run the show. Til then, he's just making sure they give him well thought out plans.

I pray you are right. There was another man who sat in the same position in the months leading up to Vietnam. McNamara. And of course, he couldn't bring himself to let the commanders in the field make tactical decisions. We all know how well that went.
