Bush Attends Traditional Dinner for Elite

President Bush and first lady Laura Bush attended the annual Alfalfa Club dinner Saturday night, a lighthearted gathering of Washington's political and business elite.

Typically rife with humorous speeches, including one-liners from the president, the black-tie gala at the Capital Hilton downtown is attended by the social club's 200 or so members and their guests.

Besides being closed to the press, other past traditions have included anointing a president over toasts of Champagne - last year Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., receiving the honorary title.

Vernon Jordan, a civil rights figure and influencial Washington lawyer, was the incoming president for this year's dinner.

According to a seating chart, others attending included the president's father, mother and three brothers and national security adviser Condoleezza Rice.

Dubbed the Alfalfa Club because the plant's roots will stretch far for liquid refreshment, it exists solely to hold the annual dinner and is often attended by the president and Cabinet members.

Overwhelmingly composed of men in tuxedos, the evening was off limits to women until former first lady Hillary Clinton broke the barrier in 1994 when she attended with her husband, President Clinton.

The 90-year-old club also inducted its first female members that year, including Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, former Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Dole, now North Carolina's Republican senator, and the late Washington Post Co. Chairman Katharine Graham.
