A fate worse than 9/11 - Son of Saddam's threat if U.S. attacks

WASHINGTON - Saddam Hussein's playboy son Uday blustered yesterday that if America invades Iraq, the U.S. will be hurt so badly that the Pentagon and World Trade Center attacks will seem like a "picnic."

"If they come, Sept. 11, which they are crying over and see as a big thing, will be a real picnic for them, God willing," Uday Hussein said on the al-Shahab (Youth) TV station he runs.

"It is better for them [the Americans] to keep themselves away from us," he said. "They will be hurt and pay a price they will never imagine," he said without specifying whether he meant by terrorism or losses in war.

Uday, 38, his brother Qusay Hussein, 36, and their father have issued a stream of threatening rhetoric in the current buildup to war, but they normally do not refer to the Sept. 11 attacks.

Statements from Qusay Hussein, head of intelligence and the Republican Guards, are deemed to carry more weight than those of his older brother, who has a reputation for partying and has been assigned lightweight duties in TV, rock radio and sports.

Uday Hussein said the U.S. "can get much more from Iraq by dialogue without resorting to the logic of force and war," but President Bush was fed up with talk and will use his State of the Union speech next week to brace the nation for the "prospect of war," a White House official said.

Explaining why

"This is not a speech to declare war," Dan Bartlett, the White House communications director, said in a preview of the annual address.

He said Bush would "educate the public about why we are taking the course that we are, that we have the prospect of war, and it's important to explain why."

Weapons inspectors were ready to give Iraq a grade of B for cooperating in the search for terror arsenals, but Bush believes Saddam already has flunked, Bartlett said. He said the Iraqi strongman was hiding "massive piles" of chemical and biological weapons.

In Vienna, chief nuclear arms inspector Mohamed ElBaradei was preparing a report on Iraqi cooperation for delivery to the United Nations Security Council on Monday that would give Iraq a generally good grade.

"Their report card will be a B. Access and cooperation are good," said ElBaradei spokesman Mark Gwozdecky. "He'll say we need several more months to come to conclusions."

... God willing...

Sounds a bit like the Taliban "birds of the air" speech.

Iraq's Olympic Panel Accused of Torture
JONATHAN FOWLER
Associated Press

GENEVA - A human rights group formally demanded that the IOC expel Iraq's national Olympic committee because its chief - Saddam Hussein's eldest son Uday - tortured and jailed athletes who failed to please him.

Indict, which is based in London, said Wednesday it lodged a complaint against the Iraqi body with the Ethics Commission of the International Olympic Committee. The group said it included witness statements from exiled former Iraqi athletes and United Nations reports to build its case.

"Iraq has violated every single provision of the IOC Code of Ethics," said Charles Forrest, chief executive of Indict. "The IOC should have investigated this on its own. Now I hope it will be forced to."

IOC officials said they were aware of the complaint but were unable to comment because they had yet to receive the document.

Indict said the Iraqi leader's son once made a group of track athletes crawl on newly poured asphalt while they were beaten and ordered that some be thrown off a bridge. It also alleged he ran a special prison for athletes who offended him.

"The Iraqi committee is the only Olympic committee in the world with its own prison and torture chamber," said Ann Clwyd, a British lawmaker who also is chairwoman of Indict. "To allow (it) to participate in the Olympic movement is to mock all of the Olympics' high principles."

Iraq was investigated in 1997 by FIFA, the international soccer governing body, following allegations that members of the Iraqi national team were tortured because they lost a key match.

FIFA spokesman Andreas Herren said two officials were sent to Iraq, where they interviewed members of the Iraqi Football Association. Twelve players also were interviewed and physically examined.

"They weren't able to find any evidence or any witness to confirm those allegations," Herren said.

But, he added, "We were quite conscious of the fact that our investigative resources were very limited. We are a non-governmental organization and there are limits to what we could achieve."

Indict was established in 1997 to get Saddam Hussein and leading members of his regime brought before an international tribunal on charges of crimes against humanity.

You know, I've been in a generally bad mood for a few days now, but after reading this garbage from Uday, I'm over the flippin' edge.

I've been to Ground Zero, I've seen the damage to the Pentagon, and I've been Shanksville. Sixteen months later, we're STILL screwing around with these psycho murderers who spout off this garbage. Can someone tell me why Saddam, Uday,Quasy, and every other enemy with vowel challanged names are still able to spew this crud?

My father proudly fought for this country in WWII in the Pacific Theater - I'm not sure what he would say if he was alive today. Yet, the very freedoms that he fought for are being threatened by our enemies overseas AND within our own borders. Again... and still.

When are people going to realize that the only way to win this war is through the total destruction of our enemy, not diplomacy. You don't negotiate with terrorists-you kill them.

The comments printed by the spawn of satan are an affront to every victim, and every family member of every victim of 9/11. Frankly, I'm sick and tired of that our enemies are still sucking air. And while I'm at it, I'm sick and tired of those spineless cowards who place so much weight into a "coalition", and equally tired of the leftists who suck this country dry like the leeches they are while enjoying the freedom that was achieved through the blood of our veterans.

I could go on, but I need more coffee.

Apparently "the mother of all battles" didn't focus-group well as a slogan this time.

The "mother of all wars" has bad connotations for Iraqis. Reminds them of the time in which Hussein was backed into "the mother of all corners".

I just wanted to see it a little better. And twice. ;-)

They're going to keep it up....until my ideas for dealing with them become mainstream. They won't like that. Specifics withheld presently, since the particulars would probably violate site rules and current standards of good taste.

"No, it is dud."

You guys are both wrong. "Uday" was named for SNL's Buckwheat.

Good comments. Any time I feel like we shouldn't go to war with Iraq, I think about the photographs of people jumping to their deaths at the WTC. Screw the Iraqi leadership.

Many Americans still take for granted that a war to topple Saddam Hussein can be fought as it was in 1991: on American terms. Even when they recognize that the blood price may prove greater than the optimists hope, most still assume it will be paid by the U.S. military or by people in the region. Until very late in the game, few Americans focused on the chance that the battlefield could extend back to their own homeland. Yet if a U.S. invasion succeeds, Saddam will have no reason to withhold his best parting shot -- which could be the use of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) inside the United States. Such an Iraqi attack on U.S. civilians could make the death toll from September 11 look small. But Washington has done little to prepare the country for this possibility and seems to have forgotten Bismarck's characterization of preventive war as "suicide from fear of death."

Many Americans still take for granted that a war to topple Saddam Hussein can be fought as it was in 1991: on American terms.

Except that the 1991 Gulf War was not fought on US terms. That is a convenient myth, a popular fable, a polite fiction, one shored up with cover stories about "avoiding mission creep," "fulfilling the UN mandate," "not offending our Arab allies," and "limiting US military casualties." Then, as now, Saddam leveraged his biological WMD capability -- specifically, his anthrax capability -- to deter any direct attack on his regime. What we have here is a little bit of history repeating itself.

Here is the real story of the Gulf War: The Continuing Storm.

They have no idea what such an attack would mean in terms of our retaliation.
