Heineken kidnapper reportedly shot dead (Holland)

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - The man who masterminded the 1983 kidnapping of the late beer tycoon Alfred Heineken has been shot dead in an Amsterdam suburb Friday, police said.

Police spokesman Remco Gerretse said Cor van Hout was gunned down in Amstelveen outside the capital by two men on a red motorcycle. Another unidentified man was wounded in the shooting and taken to a nearby hospital.

The motive was not immediately clear, but Gerretse said Van Hout was "a well-known figure in the Amsterdam underworld."

An eyewitness, Luchman Choee, said he ran to his front window after he heard gunshots.

"I saw two people lying there, motionless, and two guys on a motorcycle or scooter," he said. "I thought they were both dead, but they tried to roll away behind a car, and (the gunmen) fired another salvo."

Shootings are rare in the Netherlands, which was shocked by the murder of populist politician Pim Fortuyn by a lone gunman in 2002. It was the country's first assassination in modern times.

The crime scene Friday was cordoned off as forensic experts in white suits gathered evidence.

Police later recovered the motorcycle believed to be the escape vehicle, and were using helicopters to search for the suspects.

Van Hout was sentenced to 11 years in prison for holding Heineken captive for three weeks in 1983 and ransoming him for around $10 million.

He was captured in Paris several months after the kidnapping, still in possession of a reported $6.6 million of the ransom money.

Heineken was abducted from outside his Amsterdam office by three men with submachine guns. He was kept chained in a warehouse while the kidnappers negotiated with police by letter, taped messages, telephone calls and classified newspaper advertisements.

Heineken was eventually freed unharmed, but after his ordeal he rarely made public appearances.

Van Hout was one of four men convicted of involvement in the abduction, and was considered the leader.

Heineken died at his home of pneumonia one year ago at age of 78. At the time of his death he was believed to be the richest man in the Netherlands, with assets worth an estimated $3.6 billion.

At the office Christmas Party a few years back I had a couple of Hienikens in the bottom of the cooler and somebody kidnapped them while I was in the bathroom. I always wondered who that was...

This guy got what he deserved. I had to spend the rest of the party drinking Bud.

Take the Heineken tour in Amsterdam, they don't make the beer there anymore but the place is full of hot American tourists and Dutch girls looking for a date (the beer is sweeter there if you ask me). It's across the street from a casino, and down the street from the Reichsmuseum, but two whole blocks from a coffe house. Oh, and there's a new 'high-tech' display of the beer-making process(chuckle), a real must-see. lol

Peter R. de Vries, who is a crime reporter, said this would happen. He got inside information that he would be killed.

At the LPF forum people rejoiced, because a criminal was removed from society.

I agree.

Who would be so depraved as to hurt a producer of alcoholic beverages? There should be no mercy for those criminals, they're like child molesters or cop killers. They've crossed a line, they've gone beyond what our society can accept.
