No, I had the same thought, that it could well be family looking for either items or possibly a diary, just never posted it. I thought it might be too far fetched, more likely the tabs trying for something, as I figured family would have keys, why try to break in? Surely they could always say something about leaving something there a while back and just going by to pick it up if Scott or someone saw them and asked.

The police know who broke in and they didn't make an arrest. If it was a reporter I think they would have arrested him/her. If it was a member of Laci's family, they might not arrest the person because they sympathize with her family. Maybe they did use a key to get in but when Scott noticed things missing (that Laci's family would want) he broke the window and reported the break in.
