Because he thought he'd get a pass. But he found out that a decision had been made to ambush him. This signals that his usefulness as a propaganda tool for the left is over. As damaged goods, his only remaining use was to serve as piranha food for enhanced ratings. He's being replaced with another stooge as we speak.
