76-year-old carded buying nonalcoholic beer

OAK CREEK, Wis. -- Don Meyer was a little annoyed when a Pick 'n Save clerk here recently carded him in the liquor store.

He wasn't just upset because they carded him while he was buying nonalcoholic beer. He was upset because he's 76 years old.

Wouldn't want to profile "potential underage buyers" of near beer...

I know someone who was unable to buy a "Red Bull" like energy drink from a supermarket after midnight because it was manufactured by a beer company (even though the drink was non-alcoholic).

Just leave your entire grocery order, for them to have to re-stock. I would load up the entire cart, just waiting for them to card me. Put the beer in the middle of the order. That should gum the works up pretty well.

Imagine Popeye being carded for a can of spinach? I always thought his behavior was more like a crack addict or a speed freak getting his fix.

Remember the Looney Tune drunk charicters? They don't show those anymore. Top Cat used to be one of my favorites. I remember one of the crew was a drunk too. Even cartoons become roadkill in the crusade against teenage drinking.

My dad always said if you were not taught to be responsible with alchohol at young age and thru examples at home, you were headed for trouble. We had wine on the table my whole life. Beer on a hot summer day? A few gulps for the kid, a can for the adult was just fine. A glass of wine with lunch? Just one was ok. Just make sure you eat the food too.

When I was 14 I worked for the local stone mason as his laborer for a summer. Each friday he would sit me down at his home. He would tell me what I did well, poorly, or otherwise. He would pay me my wages and share a glass of wine with me. The wine was made by his family. His wife gave me bread and home made sausage. Children must be taught that adult behavior is commensurate with adult responsibility. Today, the same mentoring would land him in jail for providing alchohol to minors, bootlegging, labor law violations, and making sausage without a license. And we ask where we went wrong????
