Weather watchers agree that its best if everyone think warm thoughts and try to focus on indoor recreation over the next two days.
Thats because, along with sub-zero temperatures, tonight brings with it for the second night in a row another wind-chill advisory from the National Weather Service for everyone in the Granite State.
Were looking at highs only in the teens, and the lows will be sub-zero everywhere in New Hampshire, ranging from 20 below (tonight) in the mountains to maybe 5 below along the coast, said meteorologist Bob Marine, who works for the National Weather Service out of Gray, Maine.
In a word? Brutal, said Marine.
Expect today to feel like the coldest day of the season so far, with gusty blasts pushing waves of cold Canadian air powerful enough to penetrate parkas and long johns, right down to the bones.
It will feel like 25 below zero, even though temperatures will hover in the low- to mid-teens throughout most of today, according to meteorologist Ken Mitchell of Exeter, who offers updated local forecasts on the Web at www.weatherlook.com.
But night owls and all other creatures should stay close to home tonight, said Mitchell, who expects the winds to die down Wednesday, bringing some relief from the Arctic air.
As for precipitation, Mitchell said theres a good possibility of flurries late Thursday with a continuing string of sunny days and frigid nights leading up to perhaps a few inches of snow Sunday.

In the Nashua area today, the winds will be WNW at 20-30 mph, with a high of 17F and wind chill of approximately -20F. Keep warm NE freepers!

It's warm down in Nashua compared to what it is north at
Mount Washington. Currently it's -27, and that's before factoring in the wind chill! The high today is expected to be -10. Tuckerman's Ravine anyone?

Where the heck is that Algore? He promised us global warming!
Whaaah! Whaaah! I want my global warming!
At least it's too cold to snow anymore for a while.
Times like this I'm proud to be an old skinflint that browbeat his oilman into a fixed price contract.
It's already 4 degrees here in the sunny south. (RI)

I have fond recollections of winter hikes to the summit of Mt. Washington.
We once returned from the summit to Pinkham Notch at 5:30PM or so, the temp was minus-32F (throughout the day and on the summit, the temp never exceeded minus-20F). It's fairly common for Pinkham to be colder than the summit at night, something about temp inversions.
Another time we topped out of Huntington Ravine (using the summer trail) and the winds were 100+ MPH, we literally had to crawl on all fours to reach Lion Head Trail. Tough on the knees, ouch.
Here's the current observatory report:
2003.01.21 1245 UTC
Wind from the WNW (300 degrees) at 81 MPH (70 KT) gusting to 85 MPH (74 KT)
Visibility 1/8 mile(s)
Sky conditions obscured
Weather Blowing snow
Freezing fog
Temperature -27 F (-33 C)
Windchill -76 F (-60 C)
Dew Point -27 F (-33 C)
Relative Humidity 100%

It mmay not be much better here on the CT shore but that extra ten degrees or so really really helps when the dog has to be walked. In my youth I liked to play in the snow and cold (NH). Now I am content to sit by the fire when it is this cold. One of these I will migrate south with a snow shovel and when someday says "What's that?" I will know I am in the right place.

I type with my fists because of one of those trips. Started out a brisk ten below and turned real ugly. We were lucky to get back.
Oh to be young and foolish again.
I can at least still be foolish. :)

Man, it got down to 65F here yesterday. [Texas Gulf Coast] But you DO NOT want to be here in the summer when it sizzles!!!!!!!!! The happiest people here have a summer home up north some where.

I'm about 12 miles SW of Nashua, NH and I recorded zero degrees this morning (I have a electronic thermometer that transmits the outdoor temperature into the house and keeps records of daily lows and highs). Over the weekend, I recorded -10 degrees Saturday morning and -8 degrees Sunday morning so this morning was relatively mild!
I'm sure the deep snow cover is helping to keep the temperatures low this year. I drive over the Concord River every morning and for the first time in memory, it is completely frozen over.

That's it, just 20º below zero? That's what causing all the whining? What are they going to do when it gets cold?

My parents and a brother live in Waco. On a cold Winter's days in Wisconsin when I talk to them over the phone, they love to tell me how cold it got in Waco "almost got below forty above last night"...and then they laugh. But I've been to Texas in June, so I know how hot it can get there. And then I laugh because there are times when they have to stay indoors for days on end to avoid being cooked.

*sigh* I miss New Hampshire. I lived in Windham for about 5 years when I was a young girl.
We're freezing our butts off in Cleveland as well. This has been a frigid winter; Lake Erie hasn't provided much insulation this year, only lake effect snow...

We've been running about 10 to 20 degrees above normal this winter. Last winter was the warmest on record (average) and the coldest (number of sub-zero days.) This winter is just warmer. The trees are budding; there's been no snow since December 22, and only a total of about 5" anyway. No rain since August. We're just a desert normally and more so now.
The Government is not going to finish restoring the forested areas burned during the Cerro Grande fire (set by the government.) It could be a warm, smokey, summer again.

I forgot to mention that this at 7500' in NM.
To: NewHampshireDuo
Yuck! Conditions like that remind me that there are, in fact, one or two good reasons for remaining a Southern Kalifornia desert rat. It's mid 50's out right now (6:45am), expected to push close to 80 later. Mrs. Bat doesn't miss her native Minnesota either this time of year.
