Residents from across the area joined Monday in the national holiday to celebrate the life of the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The third annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in Bossier City kicked off Monday with Richard Williams, father of tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams, as grand marshal. Area residents reflected on their memories - or what they have read and heard - of King in a parade that took place under gray skies.

One must conclude that in much of the Deep South "King Day" has surpassed Washington's Birthday in attention and celebration.
