The father of Elian Gonzalez, and Olympic track medalist and a popular folk singer are on the ballot Sunday for Cuba's parliament in Sunday's elections.
Candidates for the 609 Parliament seats run unopposed, leading critics to complain that elections on the Communist Caribbean island are meaningless.
A recent pro-democracy petition signed by thousands of Cuban requested election reforms but was ignored by the government.
Fidel Castro-- a member of the unicameral National Assembly along with being President for 44 years--claims the country's vote is more democratic than those of other nations because voter turnout is high and campaigns do not involve large amounts of money and propoganda.(!!-ed)

There is no opposition candidate naturally in a commie election, so he will win.

Yes, this is great. Cuba is a terrible place. They have sham elections and they persecute homosexuals. And all the women and blacks the co-opt into their leadership are mere tokens.
Now, does anyone have any statistics on how many 'incumbents' running in U.S. elections actually lose?
Not to mention that my local Carbon County (PA) had only Democrats, RUNNING UNOPPOSED for State Assembly and, I believe Senate last time we had an election here.

At the time of the Clinton/Castro conspiracy, Elian's father was some kind of Communist Party functionary. He dutifully made his scripted plea, our press wet themselves over the 'human' drama, Reno's goon squad did their job and the rest is history. Now it looks like dad is getting a promotion - musta' done a good job on something...
To: ewing
He supported Elian being sent back.....believe it or not.

While Daddy is serving as Castro's rubber stamp what of little Elian? I'm sure his brain is in a spin cycle by now and he is happily denouncing Mickey Mouse as being a capitalist stooge while rolling cigars for the glory of the Revolution.

Casto has said in interviews that he wants to groom Elian to be his successor as leader, this may the reason why daddy is getting the promotion.
