PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) The upper chamber of the Czech Parliament agreed overwhelmingly Thursday to deploy chemical weapons troops to Iraq in the event of war.
The vote in the Czech Senate was 70-3, with three abstentions and five absent. The decision still needs the approval of the lower chamber of the parliament.
Under the measure, the unit could be sent to treat soldiers injured by chemical or biological weapons attacks with or without a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for their deployment.
If people want on or off this list, please let me know.
On the other hand, these countries who are former Soviet Bloc members are eager. Not necessarily eager to go to war per se, but eager to be on Washington's good side. They do not share in the same 'fat and happy' complacency that a Germany or a France might have. I think to them, they see this as a trade off. Washington is calling for action and other NATO members are reluctant. What better way to increase your country's prestige and standing on the world stage than step in to fill the void created by the hesitation of our longer term "allies" (even if your contribution is small)?
The Czechs will make great allies. Their record with the Royal Air Force in WWII was commendable. The Czechs lost their freedom in Potsdam as FDR handed them over to Stalin.
BTW, a great flick about the Czech pilots in the RAF in WWII is "Dark Blue World". If you enjoy prop fighters, good history, and a well told tale, rent it. Yes it's in English.
