Just spoke to one of my prior recruiters. The Marine Corps will accept applicants with a GED if the recruiting station has been allowed to accept GED applicants. What that means is, when recruiting is good, the requirements go up. When recruiting is poor, requirements go down.

This is directed by the Recruiting Station for the region. Most recruiters work out of sub-stations. (The recruiting station at the strip mall is a sub-station).

Also the applicant who only has a GED must recieve a waiver from HQMC. He is therefore looked at a little tougher than a high school grad.

Finnaly, there is more paperwork and time involved for a GED canidate than a high school grad.

So with all that said, is it possible the recruiter was telling the kid to just drop out and get a GED. Possible but not very likely. Can the kid get in with a GED? Yes but his carrear choices are limited.

I'm pretty sure your ASVAB score has more to do with your career track than your High School Diploma or Equivalency.

I had an extremely high ASVAB and The Recruiters and their Admin Brass teamed up on me as well as my Parents to get me into "higher" MOS' but I was dead set on becoming and infantry Marine.

Graduated from Parris Island [Where I took dives in the codebreaking...screwed up the math...and sound comprehension tests....I heard them little beeps in both ears.] and went to MCT at Geiger [Was interviewed for 8th & I with all the other handsome Marines over 6'1" and made it plain that I was not interested...got yelled at by the interviewing officer and was promptly dismissed as an arrogant little boot]. Then while in SOI was selected for Security Force School [Though I hadnt requested it.] and upon graduation assigned to FAST Company which at the time was [and probably still is] The Premium Marine Corps Anti-Terrorism slot...which requires a perfect (300) PFT score, expert Rifle & Pistol Quals as well as High Pro/Con marks down the sheet [Call your recruiter and verify them apples].

At no point along the way did my GED have any impact on what I did or did not do. Nor do I think it ever would've.

My performance did.

Now in the Liberal poag sectors of the Military your HS Diploma or Equivalency may matter but on the Male side of the Fleet...Actions do.

Just my small perspective.
