The road to recovery was mapped out at Concordia University yesterday, but directional signs won't be installed for a while.
Frederick Lowy, the university's rector, said that Concordia would "rapidly establish clear guidelines" on what constitutes acceptable political activity on campus. How rapidly? The Concordia administrators can't say - but it will be soon.
Lowy's commitment to happier days came as Concordia made public a report on events that roiled the university's downtown campus Sept. 9, when a violent demonstration disrupted and ultimately forced the cancellation of a speech by former Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The report, available online at www.concordia.ca, is based on videotapes, police records and witness accounts. There's a detailed chronology, from 9:42 a.m., when demonstrators began to gather on Bishop St., to 4:30 p.m., when the protesters had dispersed and the cleanup began.
The task of burnishing Concordia's tarnished image is ongoing. Lowy promised restoration of an academic atmosphere in which "people can disagree on the Middle East, or any subject, in a peaceful, civil and respectful fashion."
A balance will have to be struck, he said, between free expression and a "safe and secure" campus. Lowy warned there could be "limits on how things are said, even on what is said."
