In the case of the Likud's sitting back while some of the most important artifacts of Jewish heritage are destroyed by the PLO - the explanation is simply cowardice. The Sharon government could have prevented the destruction simply be preventing heavy machinery being moved onto the Temple Mount by the savages.

 Basically it was captured then turned over by Moshe Dayan right after the 6 day war. Dayan was great general but an atheist. Israel has been run by too many lefty atheists. That's why the 'Slamics are left to wreak havoc on the Temple Mount.

If you read the accounts of the construction of the temple in both I Kiings and II Chronicles, you will note the critical role King Hiram's Phoenicians played in its contsruction. He lent artisans (particularly stonemasons and woodworkers (Phoenicia had many shipwrights)) and provided much of the material, particularly Lebanese Cedar.

KI1 5:6 Now therefore command thou that they hew me cedar trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee will I give hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt appoint: for thou knowest that there is not among us any that can skill to hew timber like unto the Sidonians.

CH2 2:8 Send me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon: for I know that thy servants can skill to cut timber in Lebanon; and, behold, my servants shall be with thy servants,

The cedar can't be replicated BTW, there are only 370 of those old growth trees left.

It hurts everybody's heritage, even if you are Chinese. The Phoenicians were global traders and the people of Israel were their allies in that trade. For those interested in the propagation of ideas as a way to understand history, such artifacts are key. There is little doubt that together with the Phoenicians, Jerusalem was a crossroads of the world. There may be records there of the mines of Ophir, contacts in Indonesia, and goodness knows what else.

Destroying that site is a crime against humanity.
