ROOSEVELT, N.Y. -- Dangerous dogs are on the loose in Long Island Monday. A 3-year-old girl is in intensive care after two pit bulls wandered into her grandmother's yard, and attacked her.
The girl is currently at Nassau University Medical Center, where she remains in intensive care after undergoing hours plastic surgery. She reportedly has stitches all over her body, and staples in her head.
Mother of the 3-year-old victim said it could've been worse if it wasn't for a heroic neighbor who rescued the little girls out of the jaws of one of the dogs.
Emanuel McAllister said he heard screens and ran to help.
The girl was playing in yard of grandmother's Roosevelt home, when two pit bulls viciously attacked her. They dragged her face into the ground and tried to eat her, witnesses say.
The dogs reportedly had the child in their jaws, and they dragged her from the yard to the driveway. One neighbor used a baseball bat against the dogs, and McAllister used his body and feet while he tried to pry the girl out of the dogs' jaws.
"I saw two pit bulls chewing a little girl, I ran over there without thinking," McAllister said.

Dogs have rights too? /nausea off

Suprised there is no comment from the owner saying "They are really great dogs, somebody must have provoked them".
To me, Pit Bulls are like guns. If you want to have them and be respnsible for them, fine. But just as you would be liable if you left a loaded gun out in the street every day and some kid picked it up and shot himself, you should be liable if you leave a loaded Pit Bull out in the street every day.

I will just go ahead and save everyone the trouble:
"But, they are peaceful dogs, she must have been tormenting them"
"It's all in how you raise them.. They aren't a dangerous breed.."
"Why, my cousin has one and it's as nice as can be, my pit bull plays with my cat and they are best buddies.."
"Like any dog, if you act scared around them, they will attack. It's obviously the victim's fault.."
"You can make a poodle into a viscious killer also.. No, really! Just as mean as any pit bull.."

Well put. That summarizes my feelings exactly.

More harmless Pits tormenting children and other innocent people.
This breed will be outlawed, sooner or later.

Cops seek owners of dogs in fatal mauling
By Rudolph Bush
Tribune staff reporter
Published January 13, 2003, 3:54 PM CST
Two pit bulls blamed for killing one woman and seriously injuring another were in excellent condition and not undernourished, and somebody apparently had been caring for them in the Dan Ryan Woods forest preserve where the attacks occurred, authorities said today.
Police of the Cook County Sheriffs Department and Forest Preserve District are searching for the dogs owners but admitted their investigation was hampered because neither animal was wearing identifying tags when officers shot them dead.
There is very little or no information available to us about the dogs, their owners, or their history, said forest preserve spokesman Steve Mayberry.
The dogs are believed to have attacked Anna Cieslewicz, 48, of the 9600 block of South Troy Avenue, Evergreen Park, who died Sunday evening of severe injuries to her head and body, and an unidentified 30-year-old woman who remained hospitalized today.
The surviving victim initially was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and later was transferred to Little Company of Mary Hospital, Evergreen Park. She requested that no information about her condition by released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Both women were jogging in the forest preserves northern section Sunday when they were attacked, Mayberry said. Passersby found one of the victims around 11:30 a.m. in the preserve near 83rd Street and Western Avenue and called an ambulance.
Soon after, forest preserve officers found the second woman in an open field just north of 83rd Street. As the officers checked on the woman, one of the dogs charged from a wooded ridge. An officer turned and shot and killed the dog before it could reach the woman or attack the officers, Mayberry said.
A second dog that matched the description provided by the surviving victim was killed by Chicago police later Sunday nearby, along 73rd Street.
Dr. Dan Parmer, administrator of the Cook County Department of Animal Control, said both dogs were mixed-breed pit bulls. One weighed about 75 pounds and the other, 50 pounds not an unusual size for this type of animal, he said.
They are very powerful dogs with tremendous poundage pressure in their jaws, Parmer said. The dogs bodies were being examined by animal control officers this afternoon before their heads are sent to state labs for rabies tests.Copyright © 2003, Chicago Tribune

No doubt they were wagging their tails!
Hey, how do we know they are Pittbulls - maybe they are Boxer/Pittbulls - and they NEVER attack! /sarcasm

PS: I would go so far as to apply that to women who buy a gigantic dog for "protection" also.
If you can't control it, then you have no business owning it.

The pit bull breed has been genetically selected for its seeming insanity in fighting other dogs, not for "protection" of humans.

If you can't control it, then you have no business owning it. A woman in my neighborhood has a pit that she walks occasionally at the same time I'm walking my Bichons. She's got a muzzle on the dog, but he still practically pulls her across the street to get at my dogs. Her voice commands are useless, but my shouts usually get the dog to stop and retreat. I've told her that I am licensed to carry a pistol, and I do carry it when I walk my dogs.
When she sees us, she turns and backtracks, and we seldom encounter her and her dog directly any more. This woman simply cannot handle this dog, and has no business with it out on the street.

Don't mess with Pit Bulls. Dog lovers should adopt one of these:

I did, and it was the smartest thing I have ever done.

This breed will be outlawed, sooner or later. I sure hope so, the sooner the better. Time for open season on pit bulls. And the poster who compared them to guns. Guns can get stolen or people are careless with them, but dogs can get loose sometimes that guns can't because they have feet and people leave doors open and gates open, etc.

Pits are a good breed of terrier, or they were. You have the idiot breeders who have inbred the dogs to attain certain properties, wider chest, stronger jaws, etc. In the process they have inbred other traits, including dogs with perpetual PMS and a 250-pound bite.
The AKC needs to change their rules. This is not the only breed this has happened to. Rotties are getting substantially nuttier as well. German Shepherds have breeder-created hip problems. But it is all legal, because, after all, they are just dogs.

Don't mess with Pit Bulls. Dog lovers should adopt one of these: Are you kidding? A Golden, or a Lab, or even my little Bichons are seen as wimpy, not like the dog with a mouth that could very well kill its owner with its jaws. Some people just want to be around stuff that's dangerous.
Macho men need macho dogs.

They seem to prefer old grandmothers and young kids. You seldom hear about one attacking a full-grown man, although we had a postal carrier who got a finger bitten off not too long ago. Don't know what breed it was.
