recently read an opinion that the term "Fascism" was expropriated by the socialists to label the Nazis so as to distance themselves from Hitler's programs

Actually NMC EXP's definition is correct.

Private property/Gov't control = fascism.

Amerika is fascist now. We just haven't developed the snappy uniforms yet.

It pains my heart, but how could any rational person not come to this conclusion? The Chinese and Mexicans are as "Free" as we are.

I think it's a distinction without much difference. If the government controls your property, it isn't private. I just found it interesting to see how the left was/is able to re-define the debate by subtle, and not so subtle, language shifts: liberal>conservative, anti-communism>McCarthyism, patriotism>jingoism, etc.
