Another Reason NYC Was Chosen For Hosting The GOP Convention?

Folks, conservatism appears to be alive and well even here in NYC and although it has to be in the minority, the following poster could have just clinched the convention hosting for us:

This photograph was taken in a subway station in the morning last weekend...later in the day, it was GONE!

I know...but I love the two limericks on the poster (I would have chosen different ones from the book though)...especially the one about bin laden...

A couple weeks ago I was in NY for the first time on vacation. Went there for a 4 day trip, and on the 2nd day I went down to the WTC site. While there, I was checking out what the vendors there were selling (One of the things that surprised me about NY. I had no idea there were so many street vendors. They were everywhere). One of the items for sale, there, struck my attention. Namely some novelty money.

For instance, there was a bill worth $25,000,000. On it was pictured President Bush, dressed up as a naval captain. Under his picture, where the Presidents name usually goes, it said "The Hunter".

The second bill was worth $2,002. It had a picture of the firemen raising the flag, and under the picture it said "The Heroes".

Then there was the third bill. It was worth $6, and it had a picture of Bill Clinton smoking a cigar and looking smug. Under his picture it said "Slick Willie". And where it usually said the amount of money printed out (I.E. Two-Thousand Two Dollars, Six Dollars, etc) it instead said "Sex Dollars". Got a huge laugh out of that. Wish I could've gotten a couple of those bills, but I was short on cash (They were $2 each!). Oh well.

Good to know folks like you are still visiting us. God knows, we need the tourists to come back. Hope you had a great time and that you'll visit again. Yes, there are many novelty items available around here...capitalism flourishes. Isn't it amazing though that we'd connect cigars with a former president and sex in the Oval Office...that's where we are.

What did you think of the giant hole in the ground at the WTC site? You get a better feel for it if you fly past it over the Hudson River...really sad.

I visit every year with my best friend (I'm a Broadway musical geek, among other things). Will be there in June and will see the Astros play the Yankees on the 12th.

I bought a really funny "Monica Lewinsky Cigar" at some novelty shop on 53rd St. a couple of years ago that I still display proudly on my "curio shelf."

Thanks for your patronage and bring more of your friends. Hope you catch a good show while you're here! Ever considered moving?

Was there anything special about the cigar?

Oh, I LOVED it! I nearly froze to death when I was up on top of the Empire State Building, and I didn't much care for the art gallery at the Gugenheim. Couldn't believe how many little kids were running around in there considering the subject matter of a lot of what they had (The Metropolitan is the one I wanted to visit, but sadly, we didn't make it), but besides that, it was great. To bad the Statue of Liberty was closed. But it was something else to actually see it with my own two eyes, rather than looking at it on tv.

As for the WTC site, it was really sad. I've never been to New York before then, so I've never seen the New York sky line before then other than tv. While on the ferry to Ellis Island I kept trying hard to imagine what the skyline must have looked like where the Twin Towers stood. And once there, it was heartbreaking to see. For one, the buildings surrounding it which were damaged, themselves. The iron cross in the center, the one that had been pulled up from the rubble. Then there were the boards with the names of the dead on the fence surrounding it. It was a very sobering experience.

Anyway, here's what we saw:

1) We stayed at a Best Western like 2 blocks away from Times Square, so we saw plenty of that (Ate at an ESPN Zone, there. Never thought I'd ever go to a bathroom and see tv's in it, at the stalls and above the toilets. Pretty new experience for me).

2) We went to St. Patrick's Cathedral. Simply AMAZING! I have never seen a building as beautiful as that! (Though my brother, who's been to Italy twice, says churches like that are all over) We also visited another nearby church (Non-Catholic) which looked almost as stunning. Wish I could remember the name.

3) We saw the Christmas tree.

4) Walked through Central Park (During which time we saw a film crew making a movie. "Elf" starring Will Ferrel. To bad we didn't see him).

5) As I said, we went to the Empire State Building (On the coldest day during the trip, too). BTW: I gotta say I feel really bad about James "Scotty" Doohan. Poor guy. :(

6) Went to see the Statue of Liberty.

7) Walked around in Ellis Island. Looking through the Census information was pretty cool.

8) And of course, the craptastic Gugenheim. (I REALLY wish we had gone to the Metropolitan. The closest I got to it was walking by it on the way to the Gugenheim)

But all in all, barring blisters on my feet ;), I had a GREAT time! I can't wait to go there, again. Though truth be told, I wouldn't want to live there. :P To bad it didn't snow, but you can't have it all (At the very least there was SOME snow on the ground, though not a lot).

Eh? Did I miss some Scotty-related event? Nothing obvious turns up on Google...

Besides, the fact that the guy's currently in a coma, last I heard...

Just referencing that "I am New York" ride in the Empire State Building. Gotta feel sorry for the guy, getting type-cast as Scotty.
