ELLICOTT CITY, Md. -- Howard County police have charged an Ellicott City teenager with poisoning his friend by putting potassium cyanide in his drink.
Ryan Thomas Furlough, 18, (pictured, left) was charged with attempted murder, assault and poisoning. The victim, Benjamin Vassiliev, 17, (pictured, right) is in critical condition.
Police said the two teens were spending time at the suspect's house when Vassiliev went into respiratory arrest. Furlough told his parents that Vassiliev was having seizures, police said.
Paramedics transported the victim to Howard County General Hospital and then to Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore.
Investigators said doctors suspected Vassiliev had been poisoned and administered the antidote for cyanide. He remains at Hopkins in critical condition.
Detectives found out Furlough purchased cyanide on the Internet with his mother's credit card and found a cardboard box in his home marked "Hazardous Material" and "Potassium Cyanide." Police investigators determined that Furlough put the poison in the victim's soda can.
Charging documents reveal Furlough said his intent was to kill Vassiliev, something he reportedly had been thinking about since October 2002. Police said they found a letter Furlough wrote to Vassiliev revealing his desire to make Vassiliev's girlfriend his own.
Furlough was denied bond and remains at the Howard County Detention Center in Jessup.
Potassium cyanide is an extremely poisonous white compound primarily used to extract gold and silver from ores. It is also used in gas chamber executions, insecticides and photographic development.
Symptoms of exposure to potassium cyanide include weakness, vomiting and increased respiratory rate.
The chemical is widely available on the Internet.

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (Jan. 10) - A teenager was charged Thursday with first-degree murder for allegedly killing a romantic rival by spiking his soda with cyanide.
Police said Ryan Furlough, 18, laced his friend's drink with the poison as they played video games in Furlough's basement in Ellicot City in suburban Baltimore.
Benjamin Vassiliev, 17, went into respiratory arrest last Friday after drinking the soda and died Wednesday.
Police found a letter in Vassiliev's house indicating Furlough was in love with Vassiliev's girlfriend, according to court documents. Furlough told police he had been thinking about killing Vassiliev since October, the documents show.
Furlough also faces reckless endangerment and poisoning charges, said police spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn.
Police said Furlough bought the cyanide with his mother's credit card in November. The Louisville, Ky.-based chemical supplier that sold the poison, Antec Inc., said Furlough inquired about the chemical over the Internet, but placed the order by phone. He told the company he planned to use the substance to plate metal.
Furlough's parents, Susan and Tom Furlough, apologized in a statement issued Wednesday by their son's lawyer.
``We are so sorry for the pain and suffering our son Ryan has caused Ben and his family,'' the statement reads. ``Our hearts go out to all those individuals involved.''
If you're havin' trouble with your high school head
He's givin' you the blues
You wanna graduate but not in his debt
Here's what you gotta do -
Pick up the phone
I'm always home
Call me any time
Just ring
36 24 36 hey [36 24 36 hey]
I lead a life of crime
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
Dirty Deeds and they're Done Dirt Cheap
You got problems in your life of love
You got a broken heart
She's double dealin' with your best friend
That's when the teardrops start - fella
Pick up the phone
I'm here alone
Or make a social call
Come right in
Forget about him
We'll have ourselves a ball
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
Dirty Deeds and they're Done Dirt Cheap
If you got a lady and you want her gone
But you ain't got the guts
She keeps naggin' at you night and day
Enough to drive you nuts -
Pick up the phone
Leave her alone
It's time you made a stand
For a fee
I'm happy to be
Your back door man
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
Dirty Deeds and they're Done Dirt Cheap
Concrete shoes, cyanide, TNT
Done Dirt Cheap
Neckties, contracts, high voltage
Done Dirt Cheap
My Recycle Bin and Inbox are full of the stuff.
