I am proud of the Cardinal. He exposed her lie - albeit subtly - during her big "I'm-such-a-faithful-Catholic" moment.

Sorry, this was too subtle for the unwashed masses. What they saw instead was that the Catholic leader allowed the so-called "Catholic" governor the free use of his cathedral to promote her ideology--and then (as the news reports said) offered her a few "non-confrontational" reminders about matters pro-life. The cardinal treated her the way the Boston prelates treat the Kennedys, and that is more than shameful. It is sinful.

I agree. I believe they alowed the ceremony to take place in a Catholic Church. I am not sure. A Govenor who openly supports abortion does not deserve any positive coments from the Cardinal unless they are coments of condemnation. We are not talking venial sins here. Can't we all get along? NO!

One cheer to the Cardinal for his remarks, but ultimately, you are right. Allowing Granholm into the cathedral at all swamps any mild words that might have been spoken.

All I can say is at least his comments are a beginning of something I pray becomes more and more prevalent and blunt.

God bless,

I find it disgraceful that elected officials -- especially self declared pro-death Catholics use the Church as a backdrop and photo op to give them credibility but when the Church demands the right to express their concerns about public policy or insist on their right to not to partipate nor fund contraception, sterilizations and abortion they are dismissed. No wonder the American bishops are losing the fights in the states who are mandating that they must violate their basic principles because they take government money to provide education, care for the needy and sick.

I have no problem with the Cardinal making these remarks in the secular place that this woman chose over her Faith, The State House, but I am scandalized as a Catholic that a a Cardinal would allow God's Cathedral to be used to lend any credence without a care for saving souls and allow this woman's obstinacy in "choosing" the right for any person to kill her Creator's children.

Ditto for me.

Perhaps the event happened to 'open the door' and 'roll out the carpet' for Jennifer to come home again. Here's hoping she will.

Unfortunately, Granholm got her photo op, which is all she wanted. Cardinal Maida's remarks were picked up by the Archdiocese of Detroit, which is jolly sporting of them. Anyone else? If Maida's comments haven't received coverage at least equal to Granholm's, then the Church has ben had yet again, and the Cathedral's been soiled in an evil use.

He exposed her lie - albeit subtly

He did it with respect.

I think we often expect the worst, or we assume one thing. But Cardinal Maida used this opportunity to teach ... just as Jesus would have. Jesus didn't turn away from sinners, he tried to show them where they were wrong and what the Truth was.

Yes, the Lansing State Journal (the paper of record in the Michigan capital city) noted Maida's challenge to Granholm in its main article.

"Inside, Cardinal Adam Maida said several times that the right to life is the most important human right. Granholm has said she is personally opposed to abortion but supports abortion rights."

That's good to hear. I think his remarks were clear enough, although I would have prefered a more confrontational, Keyesian approach. Allowing her to use the cathedral for campaign purposes is indefensible, however.

Thanks for the link.

While I'm grateful the Cardinal's remarks weren't completely suppressed, one notes that the entire spin of the story, including the headline, is about Granholm's Big Day, not Cardinal Maida's bleating objections.

If the story's headline had said: "In Challenge to Granholm, Cardinal Holds to Pro-Life Line", and led off with his remarks, rather than bury them in a single graph near the end (therefore not on the front page, I'll wager), I might have been satisfied. As it is, this is not close to equal time, much less the media dominance that might have justified making the Cathedral available for Caesar's celebration.

Maida's comments are reported pro forma only; realistically, are they any better than a footnote, invisible to the overwhelming majority of readers? In an article of 736 words, he gets only about 5% of the ink.

Having chosen to play the toady, the Cardinal's reward has been to be insulted as toadies inevitably are. Watch as Granholm rubs his nose in it:

"This is the wonderful thing about democracy, that all people are welcome to express their opinions," Granholm said afterward.

Who the hell is she to say Maida's "welcome" in his own cathedral?

"I very much respect his opinion. I'm honored that he came this morning." ?

And who the hell is she to make herself hostess in God's house?

Sorry to disagree with you, but if Maida really thinks he got value for money on this deal, he's a sucker. IMHO.

While I join you and most Catholics in forbidding so-called Catholic politicians from using the Catholic Church to validate their heresy, and I do wish that Maida hadn't allowed Granholm use of the Catholic Church for her inter-faith service, I still think he used the opportunity to teach in much the same way Jesus would have. Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners, remember, and spread the Gospel to ALL, ESPECIALLY sinners.

I don't like how the Catholic Church is used, but in light of this speech which I think was pretty good and the Cardinal talked about the sanctity of human life at several points, I don't think I can wholly condemn him for his decisions.
