Remember, just a month ago Gore tried a similar trick. According to the Washington Post:
"Book-hawking ex-veep Al Gore, appearing yesterday with wife and co-author Tipper Gore on WAMU-FM's 'Diane Rehm Show,' evangelized for decreasing U.S. dependence on Middle Eastern oil and criticized President Bush's plan to permit drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. 'It's like an alcoholic saying, "I know where I can get my hands on another, ah -- "' Gore said before Rehm cut him off with a question, reports The Post's Barbara E. Martinez. Surely that wasn't a veiled reference to the president's checkered past with demon rum!" Lloyd Grove, the Washington Post 12/10/02 (Yes, this is an excerpt)

But consider the big picture. What everyone is talking about is a tax cut. The debate is over what type of tax cut. Dems want a tax cut that goes to people with incomes below $50,000. Bush wants something that is more broad in its impact. But everyone is talking tax cuts! We've won!!! The Dems can only win, politically, if they take an essentially conservative position.
