A very intelligent view. One thing, though: rather than blame Protestantism, one might say that the Reformation, having brough schism and violent Wars of Religion to Western Christianity helped to prepare the way for a reaction against all Christianity or all religion. France and Germany having suffered much in those wars moved further away from religious ideas than countries that were less touched by war or civil strife.

The world today cannot afford NOT to support the Christian "fundies" as they defend the Judaeo Christian West against the nihilistic terrors of the Muslim East and their partners in the secularized west. We certainly cannot expect the Pope (or the Patriarch for that matter) who relishes kissing the Koran to defend us.

There will always be a clash between the striving for Knowledge and the striving for Belief. People on both sides of the conflict have caused great harm to humanity. In recent history the greatest harm has come from the eastern world, which has not yet grasped the concept of Rule Of Law (secularized).

In the history of civilization, every society that has chosen religious rule over Rule of Law has seen Rule of Terror. And every society that suppresses religious belief has also seen Rule of Terror.

Those moderates who hold their beliefs as their own choose the secularized Rule Of Law to ensure that their freedom is protected.

The rap on Freud, though, is that he was too cynical about some things, like religion or the assertions of his patients that they had been sexually abused, and not cynical enough about his own theories and speculations.

True enough, but I would like to offer a bit of defense on Freud's behalf for the bolded area of your quote. Freud created the Elektra Complex as a result of his work with young women from Vienna who claimed that their father's raped them from a very young age. He would later speculate that his therapy with them and his thoughts that this complex might be at work was influenced by the fact that he was on the payroll of their fathers and he sublimated his desire to bite the hand that fed him. Irresponsible? Definately, but since he was one of very few doing that type of work at the time, no peer review of his work would have been available nor could he have deffered these young women to other therapists.

Birth Control equals no birth and no control. What's the question? Actually birth control is at the root of most of our problems in the western world. We are convinced that we should hate ourselves and this world enough to deny life to the next generation. Pragmatic thinking has been applied to the wrong area.

Well, if you are referring to Jesus as a man creating a religion, which I guess that you are not, then yes I would agree that Catholicism is man-made. here is a much stronger case to be made that all the "Bible worshiping" believers are members of a man-made church. For the Bible was brought to us by the Catholic Church. And that is a fact. The Bible as we know it came out of the Church and not the church out of the Bible. And the Primacy is both biblical and predates the Bible throught the writing of St Clement, Bishop of Rome 90AD - 99AD.
