I'm having a difficult time understanding what happened. The plane missed the 41 story building by 30 feet but flew over a 4th Story recreation area. So did it miss by 30 feet laterally, and at about the 6th story level?

I live in Orlando Fl and work in a 5 story, mirrored on the outside building, very near to the airport. I've seen my share of hard turns and other flying gymnastics right out my window. I always have to wonder with all the dead birds laying on the parking lot....

This kind of stuff used to happen all the time when I lived in Hackensack. All those little jets flying out of Teterboro would buzz my building constantly. Some of them weren't so little, especially up-close. Fun.

A China Airlines Airbus carrying 254 passengers and crew members narrowly avoided catastrophe early Friday when pilots took off in the wrong direction and on a taxiway instead of a runway at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.

In its takeoff just before 3 a.m., the plane came so close to running out of taxiway that its landing gear clipped a snow berm at the pavement's end before it gained altitude over Cook Inlet and flew on to Taipei, according to federal investigators.

When my son was in China 10 years ago he commented that the Chinese airplanes were held together with duct tape..he was scared to death every time he got on one..Well they have lots more American $$ now..but I guess they have not used it for pilot training

Sounds like landing at the old Hong Kong airport, which has since been replaced. For years it was renowned as the world's most dangerous place to land a plane, and only the best pilots were assigned to the route.

I went to HK in 1995, and spent subsequent time flying around the Chinese interior. The planes were modern US-issue, and I never felt in the slightest danger. But that landing at Hong Kong...wow!

We came in over the skyscrapers of Kowloon, which are built on the sides of a mountainous "bowl" which bottoms out in the harbor and airport. There are all these 30-40 story buildings clinging to the mountainsides. The plane made a radical right-hand turn. Out the window you could see one of the plane's wingtips just a few hundred feet away from somebody's penthouse. Immediately after, the plane snapped back to level flight and dropped into the bowl, touching down just a few seconds later.

Imagine living in one of those buildings, and having to put up with jumbo jets just missing your apartment day in and day out. Sheesh!

I understand the approach to the new airport is much easier, but it can't be as much scary fun.

China Airlines has a long history of really bad pilots that are frequently on the hairy edge of crashing their planes. Before someone threatens me with libel, wander over to Airlines.net and look at their "Most Popular" pictures and you will see a significant percentage of CA aircraft involved in accidents and / or dangerous flight operations. This site has a very large collection of photos of CA aircraft making hard landings into Hong Kong's old airport among others that would make one question their pilot's judgement.

That will rattle some windows! If this is CAL, it has the worst flight record in Asia. I refused to fly on it. Cathay is much better.
