Bush targets Hispanics with Web site

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Bush administration is starting a Spanish-language Web site designed to give 1.2 million Hispanic-owned businesses better access to information on government grants, trade and high-tech issues.

The Spanish site can be found at http://www.commerce.gov.

"The Hispanic community has an ally in President Bush," Commerce Secretary Don Evans said Friday.

It's a message Bush emphasized as a candidate for Texas governor and president, and one he hopes will win him support from the nation's fastest-growing ethnic minority as he heads toward a 2004 re-election campaign.

The number of U.S. Hispanics rose by 58 percent during the past decade to 35.3 million, according to census figures -- just under the 35.4 million figure for black Americans, the nation's largest minority. As many as 1 million Hispanics will be registered to vote by 2004.

The Web site is a sign of Bush's target within a community that has traditionally leaned Democratic: Hispanic business owners. Hispanics, especially women, form the nation's fastest-growing group of business owners.

"I think it's a good first step, a symbolic step, in recognizing the importance of the Hispanic community," said George Herrera, president of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, which was consulted on the new site.

Although Bush, who speaks some Spanish, has pleased many Hispanics with his appointments, Herrera's group acknowledges that there's much ideological space to be bridged between Hispanics and the administration on such issues as raising the minimum wage and immigration reform for noncitizens who work in the United States.

Health care policy, too, is a prickly topic: Hispanics, just 11 percent of the U.S. population, account for 35 percent of those without health insurance.

Yesterday's Sean Hannity radio program opened with Sean warning the President about illegal aliens.

I have never heard Sean so vehement (spelling?)! He was pleading, warning, angry, and most of all frustrated that the Admin. is permitting our country to be invaded. My opinion of Sean rose a whole lot. Oftentimes, he is very bland and says, "Let not your heart be troubled". Not yesterday ... his heart was obviously very troubled (and angry) about this issue.

When did President Bush and others gave away our country to Mexico? And is there a dark secret beneath all this, like sending every Mexican off to war in the near future. All male U.S. citizens must register with the Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday.

Male lawful permanent residents (green card holders), refugees, parolees, and asylees must register within 30 days of their 18th birthday or within 30 days of their arrival in the U.S. if age 18 through 25.

Undocumented aliens are required to register.

Why Must I Register With The Selective Service?
It is the law. Willful failure to comply with registration requirements is a felony which may be punishable by imprisonment for up to five years and a fine of up to $250,000.

Failure to register may be cause for denial of permanent residency (green card) and citizenship.

Many state and federal programs, including student financial aid, job training, and government employment, require proof of registration.

I would prefer that government doesn't give away money to anybody and I would prefer that we stop all kinds of immigration, both legal and illegal. That said, your above post prejudges 1.2 million Hispanic business people as you associate them all with having broken USA law by coming here.

Thanks much for passing that on Geezerette. I couldn't be happier that Sean has finally taken issue with Bush on illegal immigration and the disastrous state of our borders. It's an issue he has, up until recently, not talked much about.

And let's hope that Rush Limbaugh doesn't bolt to the Bush "Open Borders Camp" as some are suggesting he is going to do. He will lose half his audience if he does that. Selling Out your Country does not go over very well in the Heartland.

What happens if you do not register with the Selective Service?

You will have committed a crime, and you could, upon conviction, be imprisoned, fined, or both. You will not be eligible for federal student aid, most federal jobs, and federal job training. Male non-U.S. citizens who are 18 through 25 will no longer be able to become U.S. citizens.

Are there any exceptions?

Very few. Generally, the only males who don’t have to register are 1) the mentally or physically handicapped, who are confined to a residence, hospital, institution, or prison/jail, 2) certain agricultural workers, 3) those from other countries with lawful permission to be in the U.S., 4) those in active military duty or in military, U.S. Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine academies, and 5) those attending certain Officer Training schools.

Do I need anything else after I receive my acknowledgment card?

Yes. If any information on your registration changes--for example, if you move--you must, within ten (10) days inform the Selective Service System of the changes by:

1) going to a U.S. Post Office and filling out an “SSS Form 2,”

2) calling (847) 688-6888, or

3) visiting https://www4.sss.gov/regver/AddrChg.asp.

After you reach age 26, you no longer need to do this.
