Bush targets Hispanics with Web site

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Bush administration is starting a Spanish-language Web site designed to give 1.2 million Hispanic-owned businesses better access to information on government grants, trade and high-tech issues.

The Spanish site can be found at http://www.commerce.gov.

"The Hispanic community has an ally in President Bush," Commerce Secretary Don Evans said Friday.

It's a message Bush emphasized as a candidate for Texas governor and president, and one he hopes will win him support from the nation's fastest-growing ethnic minority as he heads toward a 2004 re-election campaign.

The number of U.S. Hispanics rose by 58 percent during the past decade to 35.3 million, according to census figures -- just under the 35.4 million figure for black Americans, the nation's largest minority. As many as 1 million Hispanics will be registered to vote by 2004.

The Web site is a sign of Bush's target within a community that has traditionally leaned Democratic: Hispanic business owners. Hispanics, especially women, form the nation's fastest-growing group of business owners.

"I think it's a good first step, a symbolic step, in recognizing the importance of the Hispanic community," said George Herrera, president of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, which was consulted on the new site.

Although Bush, who speaks some Spanish, has pleased many Hispanics with his appointments, Herrera's group acknowledges that there's much ideological space to be bridged between Hispanics and the administration on such issues as raising the minimum wage and immigration reform for noncitizens who work in the United States.

Health care policy, too, is a prickly topic: Hispanics, just 11 percent of the U.S. population, account for 35 percent of those without health insurance.

"And he [Graham] might be running to the right of Bush on many issues...which isn't really too hard to do, even for a democrat."

As strange as it sounds, you just may be right.

Watching this President veering left on almost a daily basis is like watching a runaway train wreck in slow motion.

Dubya will unveil his ace in the hole -- finally announcing with great fanfare his judicial conservative appointments -- with "promises" for more after the election...

Hey, let's be easy on GW, it's his first term. It ought to be common knowledge by now that first-term Republicans usually spend it trying to allay the fears of the recently defeated Socialcratists. The second term is when you lower the boom on their asses, not the first.

And if you're lucky enough to get a third term (B Clinton hands-off to AlGore/FDR) that's when you really let 'em have it. I predict that Bush's second term will score more for liberty than anyone would ever have predicted.

Dept. of Education-gone. War on Drugs- ended. Internal Revenue Service (service?) replaced by a National Retail Sales Tax so that everyone may enjoy the burden of "He ain't heavy, he's my Big Brother".

Yep, it might take at least two consecutive terms to turn this ship around but I remain stubbornly optimistic. Imagine what a couple of back-to-back conservative administrations might accomplish.

And then there's the monkeys. You know, the ones that fly out of my butt.

Scary, isn't it? Bush in his desire to co-opt every liberal issue and shamelessly pander to those in America with questionable legal status has left himself totally unguarded from a challenge on the right. And a Southern Democrat like Senator Graham can exploit this very easily while retaining a good part of his liberal base—meanwhile demoralized conservative republicans stay at home on election day. Bush had better start thinking ahead instead of behind.

That's what worries me -- Franklin Delano Bush masquerading as conservative for yet a second term.

BTW, get a cage for all those d@mn flyin' monkeys ;-)

In your scenario is Graham running Third Party?

I'm not staying home - I'm going to cast a write-in vote for Tancredo.

I really believe the Bush team has already calculated the loss of conservative GOPers who would stay home vs. the number of Mexicans and Muslims who might be voting for him. Somehow, their research projects a surplus of votes regarding the latter.

In a best case scenario for Dubya, he might even try and recoup a majority of "soft" alienated conservatives by reaching out as I said at the eleventh hour on issues like judge appointments, or something else even less important.

That's the way it seems -- the smallest bone for your largest constituency.

while discriminating against other business owners solely on the basis of their Hispanic heritage is right

I don't think anyone is saying that should be done. There are plenty of foreigners who have come to the US and have set up businesses ---Koreans, Polish, Germans, Italians, Cambodians and many others ----the "discrimination" here seems to be on the basis of Hispanic heritage ---where are the White House's web pages for all those other heritages? Is there one for the Polish business owner?

Mebbe the administration should hire that guy who goes on TV with question marks all over his jacket peddling free government money.

Then they could teach him two hundred languages. Then he can reach _all_Americans with the good news. ;-)

(I hope nobody on Karl Rove's staff is reading this. They probably would think it was a great idea. :-(

Yeah ---didn't Clinton pander to all ethnic groups by saying welfare benefits had to be offered in every language there is?

That's another subject. My discrimination comment was regarding to your NO grants comments.

I have a problem with the "grants". If they're making worthwhile businesses they should be able to make it on their own ---Americans I know with successful businesses didn't need grants.

In that case get rid of the grants altogether, but I don't think that giving grants to some business owners while discriminating against other business owners solely on the basis of their Hispanic heritage is right.

According to the article I read Graham would be the Democratic nominee. You bring up a good point. Would the democrats elect anyone that is not a card-carrying socialist/commie? You know, if they REALLY want a realistic shot at the WH they would well advised to select a candidate that is not associated with their fringe liberal wing. A candidate that has some Southern Potential would greatly increase their chances of retaking the WH. We will have to see how serious the democrats are.

I agree all grants should be ended no matter what race or ethnicity. If your business is worthy it doesn't need a government grant.

***Lol! And all too true. While the Empire is busy thrashing barbarians in remote central Asia, it will be toppled from within***

> Nicely Put, we are well on the way to reaching that Goal. California has almost tanked, and its, and many of the S/western States Economies have never been in a worse State since the GREAT DEPRESSION. In addition to that we are importing a "Social-Structure" Into the USA, particularly the S/West, go to California/TX/AZ/NM and You'll what i mean. And the last thing we need is More & More Expensive and failed "Bilingual" Services.

> As for this Website, why only Spanish, there are
17 Million Spanish Speaking Hispanics in the USA (of the 36 Million Hispanics), the Vast majority speak English Well, its the Corrupt Self Elected Hispanic Leaders (LULAC, MALDEF, LA RAZA) that have probably "pressured" the Bush Administration in to doing this, they want the Hispanic Population to "feel good" about themselves. Why doesn't the Bush Administration do the Same for the 12 Million Chinese Ancestarty Population, who have a greater GDP & Economic Power than Hispanics, How about the 4 Million Italian speaking Americans, or the 7 Million Polish Speaking Americans. Why does Bush only provide these "Speacial" Services to Hispanic Immigrants, MOST OF WHICH SPEAK ENGLISH. As for their kids over 65% become Engish Dominant. I just don't get it !!!

> English is the Primary Language of the USA, and the Primary International Language for Commerce, Business, Medicine, Technology Etc... and will always be, simply because it has the money behind it, particulalrly in the USA. Spanish/Spanglish & Ebonics will become the Language of Americas burgoeing and Ballooning Black/Hispanic Underclass/Poverty-Class (POOR).

> The Ironic this is all these "Hispanic" Websites, (Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, LULAC, MALDEF, LA-RAZA) **EVEN** The Anachists MECHA, all their websites are Primarily in English.... Isn't that Ironic and Strange ???

Thanks.

Regarding your #47. Like all the other laws in this land, you can be sure it is selectively applied.

As for the website the administration created, it's the height of arrogance to open a business in a foriegn country if you can't speak, read, or write the language.

It's the height of contempt for American citizens for the administration to keep aiding and abetting this foriegn invasion. It seems the "two" party system has produced little but traitors.

I think Jorge Bush is appealing to the ILLEGALS in this Country. The Only "business" they own is Crack shops (LOL).

Their too poor/un-educated and arrogant to own/run any real businesses, the Bull-Sh*t, about Hispanic "purchasing power" is just that total and utter B/Sh*t. I have travelled around the USA extensively and they are (pre-dominantly) poor/under-educated and many immigrants (inc. their 2nd Gen US-Born Kids are) semi-illiterate, note 78% of "Hispanics" are of Mexican/Central-American Ancestary. The only "Rich/Well Off" Hispanic groups are Cubans & "some" South Americans, I wonder why they have succeeded in just 1 Generation and the Rest of the "Hispanic" population has largely failed, and entering this countries Underclass/Poverty-Class ????

Thanks...
